At this point, he is pretty harmless anymore.

Along with RICO, the Patriot Act was the final nail in big time OC. There was a lot less red tape involved in surveillance after that was passed.

Rudy Giuliani had a big hand.

RICO. Tailored legislation to bring the mob down.
Using RICO correctly and effectively by the justice department. Guiliani was critical in that.

NYPD cracking down?
With help of the feds and the war on drugs. RICO was mentioned. The old school guys got old and or busted, their kids either were never made to take over or were too Americanized to take over. Every mobsters kid had a TV show or some shite now or they did. They'd have been too public or too showy for the mob to keep on as it were.
Bookies, loan sharks, and hookers? Internet has taken care of two if not all 3. There are plenty of Bodog or whatever websites now that make dealing with a bookie not necessary. The sites get shut down and another one pops up. Hookers have craigslist and backpage and I 'm sure a few others I've never heard of. Who has to go to a loan shark now? There are plenty of legal loan sharks now with pawn shops again and cash advance stores.
Henry Hill hung around the witness protection long enough I guess. He had a price on his head, but stayed out long enough that guys died and who wanted to go to prison forever over killing his dumbass.
Also, the movies tend to close the loops for the sake of the movie. The La Tanza (sp?) guys were busted about 5 years ago. It made the news. Goodfellas made it seem that Jimmy killed everybody? Casino and Departed/Black Mass (Bulger) story too. They wrap up the story in the movie, but Whitey was just caught a few years ago?

Meh, there is still massive organized crime operations in America they are just run by Mexicans so we it isn’t as romantic
We are ok with booze, and gambling but hookers, drugs and human traffic isn’t as sexy.

I think Hill’s survival is a sign that the organized crime families are a fraction of the force that they were a couple of generations ago.
While the fact the Italian Mafia isn’t nearly as powerful as it once was is indisputable, the reason Hill wasn’t whacked is because, as a government witness, it would’ve brought too much heat. The Genovese Family attempted to kill John Gotti with a car bomb in 1986 as payback for setting up the Paul Castellano hit. Fortunately for Gotti, his underboss at the time, Frank DeCicco, was the one who started the car. Henry Hill had sense enough to lay low and like others have said, he was a little fish in a big pond to begin with.

One thing that’s been a major factor in the downfall of the Mafia is that, much like American society in general, there is no personal accountability anymore. The old mafioso would keep their mouth shut and do their time while the new breed of mobster cuts a deal to save his own arse.

Almost everyone from that crew/family was either in prison or dead. Plus, Hill was too well known. If they'd have whacked him the government would have rained a shite storm down on the mob.

Rico and Rudi. The feds willingness to take over corrupt unions helped as well.
No more big fat loans and pension funds to plunder.

The same way Sammy the bull still survives, no one in NY Chicago LV or Sicily cares.

He was one of the guys I was thinking about when I mentioned more surprising people earlier.
An underboss turning is huge and add in the fact that Gotti had pretty much a cult following in his family with the people that supported him. I dont think he is completely off the radar though
His book Underboss is very good
