So, if a bakery doesn't want to sell a cake to a gay couple they don't have to worry about being sued and shut down by the government?

The trick is denying service without giving a reason. Unfortunately , or fortunately depending on your views, most people who care enough to no serve gays are not capable of doing it in a tactful way.

To have laws on the subject is pretty stupid in the first place. If you want open a bakery that only serves straight white men, you should be able to do it. However, you should also be forced to suffer the consequences. The free market doesn't need these kinds of laws.

So...do they start screening customers who are divorced...or have cheated on their spouses...or have cheated on their taxes...or have stolen something...or have coveted their neighbor's goods...or have taken the name of the Lord in vain...etc., etc., etc. Funny how "Christians" are singling out this one "sin", or behavior, to discriminate against. No problem selling to a murderer, I guess (long as he used a gun! ;) )

What does this matter? The point is, if I own a business, I should be able to wake up in the morning and decide, I'm not going to do business with anyone wearing a red shirt today.

Wouldn't it be nice if any private business could deny service to anyone they wish?
Under a couple circumstances like they do not accept public dollars/contracts, and it must be clearly stated who is being discriminated against.
Supporting this position doesn't mean that I would personally like to discriminate or support a business that does but atleast I will better know who supports what.

Good job Phil. Can you imagine if a Muslim baker living in San Francisco turned down making a wedding cake for a gay couple? The libs would be tied up in knots. Since Christians are targeted in these faux law suits, no one cares that Christians have rights as well.

No. I would serve everybody, because I think God will judge me more favorably for being a kind person than for mistreating people who do different things with their genitals that I do.

I'm just suggesting a way for assholes to let everyone know they're assholes without getting arrested or sued for violating someone's civil rights.

You people defending this have not read the whole bill.

I agree businesses should be able to deny who they want for whatever reason. Singling one out in legislation is a scary, scary precedent.

Is this really a surprise?

This is the state where you can get caught on video beating a defenseless woman who is laying on the ground in the head and only get charged with simple assault and disturbing the peace (both misdemeanors).

Bingo. In the end, I believe the market would sort itself out. Maybe not in backwoods Ms but in Baton Rouge or New Orleans if a restaurant or grocery store decided they were for whites only then the market would react and I don't mean the black market. LGBT would not be as big of a deal here though.

Who's right to be offended takes precedence? The woman who don't want men in the womens restroom, or the dude who thinks he is a chick and is offended if he can't use her restroom?

You're missing my point. Enforce that general law, but singling out one group in legislation is fricking stupid. Absolutely stupid.

Yes.

the problem with the pre civil rights era is that the government also took part in discrimination

that is obviously unconstitutional

Oh, so you think a business owner should be arrested and sued for denying service to someone?

Kind of. Then we passed the civil rights act.
