If they found land, it was Vieques or PR. The closest point in DR is almost 200 miles from where the boat was found, which was 20 miles SE of PR, on Friday September 22

Yes, they identified the boat, noted the dinghy was not attached, banged on the hull with no response, but did not enter it. There is an emergency hatch underneath the boat in case it capsize, which was unopened, leading them to believe it was abandoned. I don't know why they wouldn't search the inside to make sure there was no one inside.

So it was showing above water surface; or did they detect their boat with sonar type of machinery?

Literally thousands of boat owners did the same thing and came out OK, if you want to protect your boat from a storm you don't leave it tied to a dock. Unfortunately all it takes is a couple of things to go wrong to turn a situation that worked fine for others into a disaster, that is the nature of open water, it does not mean the decision to do it was stupid.

Floating upside down. Those boats don't sink. Not easily anyway, the 2 hulls have foam, I believe, so they just "turtle" upside down.

He did the exact same thing for Irma and Jose. Except he went south of the storm. Unfortunately it looks like they had trouble and were caught up in the north side of the storm. That storm blew up in a day and a half

The boat was broken down, correct? So getting in the motorized dinghy makes sense. Maybe they are in PR? Was the ships skipper experienced in the carib waters? They are in my prayers...

They used their phone off of the coast of PR, so I'm assuming they could see the island

I had forgotten their boat broke down, we don't know when they abandoned their boat onto their motorized dinghy. I was presuming they abandoned long before the boat capsized near southern PR.

That's true but based on the other thread, all they had was a cell phone and an EPIRB.
Going out into hurricane waters with just that is basically going out there with nothing. Cell phones aren't going to be reliable and an epirb isn't going to be much use in a disaster area with no rescue personnel
Hopefully they had some other means of communication

I just left Puerto Rico. About 80 % of the island is still without power.
That said, several hotels and restaurants are running seamlessly (to the public) on generators. AT&T and T-Mobile had their crews on the island. Cell phone service does work, however it is spotty at times.
I can't imagine that if this couple were still with us on earth that they would have reached out to someone back home by now.
Sad and unfortunate situation.

Very unfortunate. I think its safe to say at this point they will likely never be found. I hope to be wrong.

No mention of the condition of the boat. If it appeared intact, then I don't know why you'd abandon the boat and hop in the dingy. (Perhaps the sails/masts were ruined and they had no way to navigate and the dingy had a functional motor). The OP in that other thread did say the sailboat had engine issues before leaving harbor.
