Its possible but there isnt a known poulation like in NW Wyoming around Cody.
The Bighorns straddle the Wyoming-Montana line in Northern Wyoming.
Cody is closer to Yellowstone.

I know where they are. I lived in Wy for 8 years. Cody is near Yellowstone so there are grizzlies. Buffalo and Sheridan in ihe Bighorns are in NE Wyoming

We'll be out there next July.
The Snowies down near Laramie.

Go ask the Kodiak with the toothpick hanging out of his mouth if he has seen Mr. Gardner.

I wonder how much high altitude hiking he's done. AMS can whip your arse if you don't know how your body will respond. You can be a very fit hiker but altitude effects everyone different.
Also not sure if there would be cell service on top of cloud peak. So he may have been using a sat messenger. They are very common. Report said he texted but could have been a sat text.

Hell, a knife and a gun is a pretty standard EDC just to go to the grocery store much less hiking somewhere that remote.
Do you live in the Wild West?
ETA: I can’t imagine feeling like I need to pack heat going to my neighborhood Fresh Market

It happened to me when we were hiking the Snowies in SE Wyoming in 2017. We were just shy of 12,000 ft and I start gasping for air out of nowhere, and I'm in pretty good shape. After about 5 minutes I was fine but AMS is no fricking joke.

You might if it's in New Orleans East.

I hike alone, and I have two kids. I also rent and carry a SPOT device if I am in the backcountry, and I leave an itinerary with the ranger office.

I seriously doubt The Fresh Market opened a store in New Orleans East

Dude could have gotten in an accident heading to work and died; just like you might choke on a Twinkie and die this weekend

Definitely. I camp in RMNP at around 10k and have no problems. This summer, I spent a couple days in Leadville (at just over 10k) and struggled.

Truth
... my neighbor...
quote:
At approximately 6:24 p.m. later that evening, a 53-year-old woman and 56-year-old man were unloading groceries from their vehicle when three unknown men armed with guns approached them in the 7000 block of Camp Street. The unknown men demanded that the man and women relinquish their possessions. The woman’s cell phone was snatched from her hands and the man gave up his phone and wallet. The unknown men continued to search through the 56-year-old man’s pockets for change while another unknown man searched the vehicle. The men then fled in an unknown vehicle.
The string of robberies continued at approximately 6:45 p.m. A 62-year-old female was walking with her groceries in the 5100 block of Willow Street when three unknown men approached her, demanding her property. The woman attempted to flee but was caught and pushed to the ground. She began to scream, causing the men to flee in a Toyota 4Runner.
... Camp / Willow are dangerous places for carrying groceries ...

That's kind of a necessary evil (going to work). The hiking then and there alone? Not so much.
That is the difference.

That’s really late to summit a mountain. Most people try to summit starting really early in the morning so that they can get off before the afternoon thunderstorms.

I see bear and cougar comments. While very possible, the most dangerous animal I ever came across, albiet in the Uintas, was moose with young. They will kill you with a quickness.
