Starter home = an hour plus outside the city in big cities.
There's a lot of folks who live in BR Metro that don't realize the world outside their bubble works differently.
To get a "starter house" in DFW either requires living in the hood south of I-30 or moving to Prosper, TX which is about 35 miles from Uptown.
The average house cost is approaching 300k here.

, do youngun's do starter homes anymore?
I guess not . The first house I bought at 21 was 49k.. I'd kill for that house note again.

Yeah it's our fault houses don't cost 50 fricking grand anymore.
A starter size home in Dallas is $400k+. Close to downtown is the only place you'll find them. New construction is usually 1800+ even way out in the country and is $250k+ to have a 2 hour a day commute before considering traffic.

I have several friends who have houses, in that range, that are in great neighborhoods. I didn't understand why you would make an assumption like that but then I saw where you live. Scottsdale is full of stuck up bitches like you.

I know why you’re getting downvoted but you’re absolutely right. If you find a house for under 200k in NOLA, or in BR or on the north shore, you are either out in BFE or you are in a horrible area

It feels everything is going up minus wages.
I have been in the workforce for about 20 years and my wages have consistently increased. But I also have consistently worked at gaining new marketable skills, have saved and invested, and I am now at a place of owning one small business and about to start a second while still collecting by corporate paycheck.
People want their wages to increase, but aren't willing to improve themselves or gain any new skills to justify higher wages is likely a big part of the problem.

t’s really hard to find a builder that’s wants to build a starter home as they don’t make as much money as in a McMansion and have the same headaches. Also, those starter homes a lot of boomers bought in the cities are no longer starter homes, but the boomers retirement homes
So a starter home today means new?
Hard to know how it is in different parts of the country, but starter homes here (St. Louis) can still mean fixer upper where you update the flooring, windows and siding and repaint and build some nice equity for your second home.

I’m just saying that in general....low cost of living area are that way for a reason.
There is something that makes that area less than ideal to live at.

Oh yeah, my buddy bought one of those in Dallas. It was $450k for 2 bed, 1 bath. Perfect starter home.

Tell businesses to higher entry-level employees at least industry average pay and have them do tons of OJT. Companies are refusing to invest in their employees. They will let you walk over a deserved 5-10k salary bump because they want to pay entry-level shite wage.

Don't live in Dallas. You also make more fricking money than we did back then. Quit being a frickin pussy and learn a trade so you can feed yourself. Going 150k in debt on student loans to make 40k a year is dumb. If you can't hang where u live move.. there's plenty of construction work in Texas..

Notice how this article focuses on "millennials". The middle class is dying across the country to matter what generation you're from.
This is just another propaganda article aiming to separate the people of the USA. If we're busy arguing about generation, sex, gender, all that bullshite, we can't focus on the real problem - class. The rich get richer while the poor get poorer.
Now before you all get your pitchforks out, let me just say. I'm 29 year old home owner pulling in 6 figures. I have NO complaints about how my life has worked out so far, but it's getting to the point were people like me are the minority. Whereas, people in my situation were closer to the majority in the 80s.
Nowadays, a college grad has a frickton of debt, rising rent prices, and a job that doesn't pay shite. We can't have every expense keep rising while wages stagnate. It's not sustainable in the long run.
Inequality will lead to an all out class war eventually if we're not careful.

$185,000 in Mandeville. It's 30 mins from Metairie and a mere 45 mins to downtown New Orleans. That's what? 4 blocks in Baton Rouge traffic?

There's no helping you change your mind.
You clearly are stuck in the 1970's somewhere.

No starter home doesn’t equal new, find me a place that routinely has houses pop up on the market for $100 k and I’ll show you a shitty neighborhood where you need bars on your windows.
Cable
Builders contracted by developers build starter homes. I’m not saying you get a custom built starter home. Even then, they don’t want to build anything less than 1,800 sqft or less than $200k

So much dumb in one post.
I have zero student loan debt, make plenty to where a trade job isn't neccesary, and have no need to leave Dallas to afford to live.
None of those change housing prices and moving from Dallas is a horrible and lazy solution.

Im turning 33 in a few weeks, and none of these things are a want or need for me.
You've suffered PTSD from the Great Meme War.
