When our military and government contractors create some new military tech, why do we sell it to other countries? I mean, I know why. Money. But why is it allowed? Like the F-35. Some of our allies have them but if the relationship turned sour they would have the same capabilities as we do. Or do we hold back some of the features of weapons systems?

ETA Is it because by the time we roll something "new" out publicly, its been developed for 20 years already? Do we have something more advanced than the F-35 that is already secretly operational?

"We" keep all the code it takes to run them.

Also, it is propping up the economy. We give other countries money that they can only use to buy from our military contractors.

Corporate welfare to the big military firms

Because you share some of the developments costs. Britain and the us have a long history of doing this. The F-35 the U.K. Air Force has will be basically identical to the us version. Avionics might be Brit specific as was with the Harrier amongst others.

They rarely use the exact same tech as us, usually a lower form and often times much mower.

Also, they don't always use the same weapons and platforms as the USA. I.e. They may fly a F-16 but use a German made bomb or some shite like that. Or we sell them on bombs and weapons that they will use on platforms we don't have, like we sell them a bomb that they may use on a MIG.

As said, it's so that our companies and government can share expenses. But it's also very good and very BIG business. Every country in the world is not going to manufacture weapons. Someone has to sell them to them.

This. The only thing keeping the F-16 and F-18 assembly lines running is export sales.

Foreign nations buy our outdated airframes because they're proven and are upgrades from the old fleets of jets they currently operate.

With new or still in use military technology like the F-35 and M1A1 Abrams, we sell an "export" variant that runs different software and has different features than what the US uses. Take the M1 Abrams for example, Saudi Arabia bought a shite load from us but they do not have the same armor and fire control systems that their US counterparts have. They've paid the price for it in human life as well.
