Just like my Dad's cousin who was in the National Guard and impersonated getting injured at Kassarine Pass and again on Sicily. He was left-for-dead by the Germans at the former, and sent home after the latter. Let's also not forget about those National Guardsmen who impersonated getting killed in the helicopter training accident in Florida; one actually impersonated getting buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Why do so many military men love to talk so much trash about other branches while going into total melt at the first comment about their branch.

The 101st tattoo with the Airborne badge is killing me. Everyone who's been there knows it's all about Air Assault.

Because it's fun. It breeds competition and builds esprit de corps. Why do graduates of different universities talk trash? Why do residents of different cities or states talk trash to one another? It's the same concept.

Why do some military men like to talk, talk, talk, talk, talk about their glorious achievements in the fields of honor, but, when they are civilians again, they never have time to join a veterans' organization that helps veterans?
The best vets are out there doing work to help fellow vets. We can help ourselves and our fellow vets by keeping these organizations strong. What's happening now is that there are way too many elderly members and too few of the new vets joining.

This beret is outstanding. Off center rank instead of unit crest, flash damn near over his right eye, and he's obviously never had "parallel to the marching surface" screamed at him 20 tomes a day. Winning.
I'm not even going to get started on that jacket. I don't understand why these guys don't just look up the regs online.

Only speaking for myself, but I gave the VFW a shot. It's hard to stay interested when you're 30 years younger than the next youngest guy.

The VFW has a loud voice in Congress, and this voice always advocates for vets. If you care to see this voice of advocacy continue, help out. It's all too easy for Congress to forget about us, and, if nobody takes the place of the 70 year olds now in the VFW, that voice will grow silent. Congress will be more than happy to spend that money on some other constituency group.
Millions of VFW members means millions of VOTES. That's what catches the ear of Congress.
If you don't join up and be a leader for the next generation of the VFW, the org will become defunct. That voice in Congress for you and other vets will be silenced.
I know exactly what you mean about how elderly these groups are, but, the true meaning of this is that it is time for you and I to step up and take charge so that the WW2 vets and Korean War vets can take a rest.
If this seems unimportant to you now, that's fine. Like I say, there are PLENTY of other constituency groups lobbying for that money, and these other groups would be happy if the veterans groups went defunct. Believe me, none of these other constituency groups are interested in helping vets, so, we will be on our own.

That's easy to say but when you go they treat OIF/OEF vets like second class citizens. VFW is completely broken that's why you see groups like RWB gaining huge traction.

I certainly appreciate your passion and you make good points. I am a member and pay dues. I just don't hang out at the hall.
The VFW has got to move out of the smoky depressing bar model and have something that draws younger vets in. I know you will say that starts with younger vets showing up, and you're right, but it's just a circle. How do you bring in young vets without first changing the model and how do you change the model without input from younger members?

Also agree with this. I've read that they did the same thing to the Nam guys and that's what put them in this predicament in the first place.

Get your buddies to join up. Go to meetings. Run for office in the chapter. Many chapter officer slots that are elected positions are given to a member because only one member wants the officer slot. They run unopposed for the office.
Once the younger set of vets have the officer slots, like Commander, then you make the changes because then you have the power.
Don't like smoking? I don't either. When enough of the old smokers are gone, make your Canteen/Bar non-smoking until 11pm or something like that. He who has the power makes the rules. If the old smokers don't like it, it's "Sorry, Pal, take it outside."
VFW, DAV and American Legion are community service orgs, so, there will be plenty to do to help local vets.
For example: every Christmas, my VFW chapter brings a few thousand dollars worth of socks, underwear, pajamas and other personal necessities to the guys that live here:

If you don't have the personal initiative and desire to get your foot in the door of your local chapter and take over that MF by becoming an influential leader and officer of the org, then, VFW may not be for you.
When the OIF/OEF vets take over the officer slots, then they have the power. I can assure you that the 75 to 90 year old WW2 and Korean War vets are ready for the new vets to take over the leadership.
All that's needed if for you and your buddies to step forward and take charge, and not to give one goddamn second thought about anybody who says you can't.
VFW has millions of members and to Congress that's millions of votes. RWB probably doesn't have that kind of name recognition in Congress.
