It really is a human nature thing for the people that merged early to feel like the cars in the other lane are just trying to cut. They don't realize by not letting people in down the line they are actually causing the traffic to worsen.
also, letting them in does not increase your time it will take to reach your destination by any more than a few seconds.

Of course it's case by case. If there's one lone a-hole that wants to drive 20 over the limit or beyond, it should only take a second or two to let him pass. If you are doing this right, you are not hitting the brakes to move right and he's not passing you on the right.
how about when I am waiting for someone to get in the right lane so I can pass and the a-hole behind me thinks its me that is causing his slowdown and tries to pass on the right?

if by doing it right you mean have some open road to work with, then I agree. But there are a lot of times where I'm doing 80 mph, and blowing by tons of people in the slow lane who are doing 65-70 mph. There's no way to sneak in without having to slow down quite a bit.
Keep in mind i'm thinking of Nashville, where traffic is congested as shite.

If he can move right and pass two cars before getting back over to the left lane, the guy in the left lane in front of you is an egregious example of a left lane camper.
He's being an impatient a-hole, but the guy camping out in the passing lane is creating the dangerous situation for everyone.

adequate space
This is pretty subjective based on driving confidence and traffic conditions.
You're supposed to use the two-second rule when following, but people like to fly by in the right lane and cut into that cushion when you are stuck behind a guy slowly passing in the left.
I know I've made friends and family that follow me go nuts because I'm a big time practicer of merge left, pass, and merge right. My mother in law once asked me why I change lanes so much. Mind I'm not talking about darting through traffic.
I had someone riding with me comment about not staying left if I knew I would be overtaking the next truck. Well, there was plenty of time for me to get over and let anyone potentially behind me pass.
It's simple really and keeps you from zoning out and poking along. To me, I feel far more engaged when I drive this way.

If there's adequate space to safely move over to the right, how can you possibly be passing someone on the right
Well, in all fairness, he actually passed someone about a mile back. That should be good enough for him to block the left lane the rest of the day to keep those evil 85mileanhourers at bay

good point actually, especially with not zoning out

I've said multiple times you should always gravitate to the right lane, Ben.

The dynamic on a congested urban freeway is very different than on open highway. It takes longer to move over, traffic is closer together, and it's much less safe to drive 15-20 mph faster than the right lane.

I think they put this in every Toyota Avalon owners manual.

correct, but folks in the city tend to drive pretty fast in the passing lane. 80 mph in the passing lane is probably the standard around downtown Nashville.

Did anything happen to the driver of that truck?

what should I do?
sit behind him and contribute or pass like on the right with everyone else

That was actually the selling point my driver's ed instructor had way back when. He even encouraged occasional lane changes on long drives along stretches of open road for that exact reason.

Do this every time I get into a situation like this. Dude in the left lane is using me to block traffic and aggravate the tailgater. Not happening. Let those two morons sort out their issues with each other.
I wish more people would have enough awareness to realize this. You are being used as a pawn in a trashy retard traffic game! Get out da way.

You sound like a courteous driver who tries to be very safe.
I agree with you 100%. Drivers that want to be somewhat disengaged or avoid changing lanes, slow down and move into the right lane. Everyone towing a trailer should probably just do that. You can get away with looking into your rear view mirror less often there.

The first time I had to drive in Boston I had a hard time with not driving that way. I'm a confident driver, but I like to drive respectfully.
Their style of driving is such that the use of a turn signal is a sign of weakness and it lets the driver in the next lane know that he needs to do everything in his power to not let you in front of him.
It actually became kind of fun to pretty much just cut everyone off once I figured out it's what you had to do.

Yet another reason why I am not compatible with the east coast.

My philosophy is that I am the regulator. I will stay in the passing lane going going 80+ mph so long as I am traveling at a rate of 5-10mph faster than the non passing lane. If you close on my arse going 95+ I will get over when it is safe for me and the drivers in the slower lanes for me to do so. I am the decider of that. You will not pressure me with flashing lights or tailgating to make a move into a 4-8 car length space at 80mph. I will do it when I am good and damned ready and that is typically when there is a wide open 50+ yard gap to move into AND will not result in me being boxed in for a while. I regulate that shite....not the reckless trucknut maniac pushing the adrenaline envelope. They can go frick themselves for all I care. I am the regulator.
