Memphis has Beale street and some of the surrounding areas (I think called germantown maybe?) which are cool, but I mean other than that it doesn't seem like there's much there.
There's not. Plus, Beale is horrendously overrated, and the areas adjacent to it are war zones.
Germantown has become like the Dallas suberbs -- nice but faceless, and traffic is a nightmare.

Bham is pretty solid for young professionals. And the suburbs are great for families. I live in mtn brook and while I'm the youngest on my block, I don't mind one bit
Mountain Brook is awesome

Damn there are places that are worse than B'ham? I find that hard to believe.

Their populations aren't even comparable
Memphis: ~ 655,000
Birmingham: ~212,000
They're actually quite comparable
Memphis metro area: 1.305 million
Birmingham metro area: 1.130 million

Grew up in Memphis and lived there until '09, when I moved to Birmingham. Cosmo is spot on here. Family life if much better in Bham. Live in Vestavia. Great schools, safe neighborhoods, lots for families to do. Great youth sports. Nice, friendly people. Extremely high milf to bigun ratio in the OTM and Mountain Brook areas. All these things are crucial to happy middle-age life. Memphis is a great place to party, it just takes a long time to figure out where. Once you do, there is something awesome to do about 363 nights a year. You need lots of cash to really do it right in either place though.

Both are > BR If you are young and single i say memphis. If you have kods then Birmingham. (mountain brook, Vestavia)

I'd go to Birmingham in a heartbeat. Memphis is ghetto and Birmingham has more industry (available jobs) and is overall a MUCH nicer and classier city than Memphis.

How so?

Ehh, If you were to move to either city blindly on the fly I bet more people pick B-ham so you would have more people in a similar situation to have fun with. More transplants there. Having said that, I am life long Memphian and love it here, but would be completely different if I moved here and didn't know anyone. To be honest I feel like I need to be quick to defend Memphis. It has its problems, but what city in the south doesn't. If you had a mind of your own and didn't jump on the "Memphis will kill you"-bandwagon and actually came to visit you would be met with delicious fried chicken and ribs, cold beer, and good music - just to name a few high points. Can't argue with that.

Metro area size is comparable, but the similarities really end there. Bham has more opportunity for young professionals with degrees and the UAB health system is pretty large. Memphis is "the" distribution hub; lots of big rigs on the road and warehouses around. The UT Health Science Center is there, but not nearly as large. St. Jude is something special, but the number of people that work there is an almost immeasurable percentage of people in the city. Memphis wins on food, music, and zoo.

Not so much. Midtown and East Memphis have a LOT more old money & class than anywhere in Bham, Mountain Brook included. Stop hanging out in Raleigh.

If you were forced to move to either Memphis or Birmingham, where would you go and why?
Birmingham (area).
Really sweet suburbs in a good travel hub. Easy drives to Atl, Nashville, Nola, and the beach.
Good neighborhoods, larger market than it gets credit for, low crime as long as you stay out of a few bad areas.
Some of the best hospitals in the world and a diversified set of industries in the area.
