Wife has relatives living near one of these border towns. We used to go across and have meals in the nicer restaurants and visit some of their friends over there. Haven't gone in years due to the problems. Some of their friends have even abandoned their border town homes (very nice, big houses) to move into US for their safety. Don't go!

I'm gonna have to say I'm a little jealous. We used to go out there about once a year on Jeep trips and stuff. I've stayed in Alpine a few times as well and I've always like that little town.

I really enjoy the small town life and being close to the park. I take my jeep or motorcycle down there. I see you are in Nassau Bay. I used to live in Seabrook then made way through NOLA and BR before coming to West Texas.

My first travel nurse assignment was in Tucson and many residents of Tucson suggested a day trip to Nogales for shopping(park on American side of Nogales and walk into Mexico). This was back in 2005. Wish I would have checked it out then. May still not be so dangerous now if you went during the day in a group of people(and someone spoke Spanish in the group).

I know people that live here that frequently drive to the beaches in Rocky Point Mexico and to San Carlos to go diving and they say they feel safe there.

I have a good friend (last name Williams) from Baton Rouge that now lives in Alpine. Great little town and so close to BBNP. He and his family camp at the ranch a lot.
I used to go to Big Bend at least once a year. We did the mountains, and the four wheel drive desert roads. Glenn Springs was a favorite area. Haven't been back since 2003.
Really a beautiful place.

I was in Nogales AZ last March. We did not cross but my friend who is Border Patrol said it was relatively safe. Ojinaga Mexico is the closest legal port of entry through Presidio TX from where I live and people cross there all the time to shop and eat with no problem.

I lived in McAllen for 2 months, and even those Mexicans won't go down to Reynosa. You're asking for death if you go down there. Hell, they told me not to go any further than the sports bar that was across the street from the hotel I was staying in, and that was McAllen.

Very. It's far from any of the drug routes and is dependent on tourism. You'll be fine.

Yeah I'm sure it would be ok, I just wouldn't want to go over there all by myself(no hablo espanol). A friend of ours was deported back to Mexico couple years ago(he's originally from Chihuahua) and lived in the Mexican side of Nogales for a year or so until he could get all his stuff straightened out with immigration(he lives here legally now). If I was really curious about Nogales...I'd have him tag along and give me a tour.

The US State department's travel warnings for Tamaulipas are almost comically dire ( holy shite). It sounds like you will be robbed, kidnapped, sold into sex slavery, and/or murdered just going over there.

I take it you haven't heard about the two Australian surfers...

If you do get captured by the cartels, this phrase could save your life: "Quiero ser una mula."

about 18 years ago I flew to Arizona to meet friends and we drove to Rocky Point for a triathlon. Our hotel room door's lock didn't work so we took our stuff with us. less than an hour there ALL our stuff was stolen out of vehicles, so we had no luggage/toiletries and shortly thereafter we were robbed of our purses and wallets/no money or keys. We had another american cash a check so we could get gas back to Arizona and I showed up at the airport with no license and no keys for my vehicle and house back home. they let me on plane and I had a locksmith meet me at car and home on a holiday. I was lucky to make it out of there and will not be going back again. Everyone who raced ate out the night before and got food poisoning. It was awful.
