Driver in deadly Mid-City crash was drunk, jailed on count of vehicular homicide, NOPD says
New Orleans police arrested a man accused of drunkenly crashing his car into a woman pedestrian and killing her in Mid-City on Mardi Gras afternoon.
Brian Gray, 38, of Metairie, was booked with vehicular homicide after he fled from the scene of the accident, police said. The woman’s identity was not released, but police said she was 50.
Police said Gray was driving toward Lake Pontchartrain on Canal Street in his Ford Escape when he struck the woman as she was crossing at the intersection of North Gayoso Street about 3:10 p.m. Gray then drove off, and he was detained after officers found him in the parking lot of a shopping center at the corner of South Carrollton Avenue and Tulane avenues, more than a mile away, police said.
The woman was taken to the hospital, but she died there.
While in custody, Gray registered a blood-alcohol content of .172, more than twice the legal limit of .08, police said. He was then jailed.
The Coroner’s Office is expected to release the victim’s name later, and it will conduct an autopsy in the case, police said.
