CRIME
Memphis police officer shot and killed while responding to suspicious vehicle report; 1 suspect dead
By Alex Sundby

April 12, 2024 / 11:07 AM EDT / CBS News

A police officer in Memphis, Tennessee, was shot and killed when officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle early Friday morning, police said. One suspect was killed and two other officers and another suspect were wounded in an exchange of gunfire during the incident, interim Police Chief Cerelyn Davis said during a news conference

quote:

The slain officer was identified as Joseph McKinney, who had been with the police department for about three years. The slain suspect was identified as an 18-year-old man.

Officers returned fire and the suspects drove away, Davis said. After a short pursuit, the suspect vehicle stopped. One suspect was immediately apprehended, and the other was taken into custody nearby after fleeing the scene. They were both taken to a hospital in critical condition with gunshot wounds, Davis said.

The 18-year-old suspect was arrested last month on auto theft charges and released without bond, Davis said. When he was arrested in March, the suspect had an illegally modified semiautomatic weapon, Davis said.

This is precisely why you fire until all are neutralized. Even if its 90 rounds.

I’m quite sure an over dramatic black woman will not be fainting over this.

This won’t get 1% of the national coverage as the criminal that got shot.

Or keep his arse in jail for the previous offense. How do you get no bond with an auto theft and semiauto gun charge?

If you can arrest parents of a kid that does a shooting because they bought him a gun... Then you should be able to arrest DA's and judges that let these little thugs go.

States should start passing legislation that allows victims and victims families to hold public office holder personally liable for willful neglect of duty as it pertains to public safety. This officers family should have the right to personally sue the DA for his decisions to release the guy who eventually killed the officer.

I feel like this liability would be more easily proven in court than that ruling that the Swiss government was liable for damage to its citizens from climate change.

At worst it's dereliction of duty.

RIP to that cop, I feel for his family.

Because our DA is Steve Mulroy, a Soros guy who literally ran on reforming/doing away with bail. That's how.

I fail to understand the mentality behind the notion that people shouldn't have to post significant bail in most situations but rather are simply... let out of jail. It is mind baffling. If you can't afford to post a significant bail, perhaps you shouldn't commit a crime that might require one. Personally, I could give two craps about it being a hardship and unfair. Don't be a criminal.
