could you really stay under the radar... I mean could the news technically pay the gas station or the business for the surveillance tapes to get a picture of you.

Even if the gas station gave the footage to the news (which is questionable since no crime was committed), you have to pay with cash so they would only have a picture with no name.
Also not a great legal move by the news/gas station since the guy they are trying to expose is now a multi millionaire that can sue them into the ground.
