Medical Professionals: Alabama has approximately 800 ventilators available statewide

To help treat Covid-19 patients. Is that likely to be enough for the predicted surge coming in the next couple of weeks?

Maybe, depends on what else happens and who else needs vents.
If all 800 of those are dedicated to COVID19 only, an estimated 7000-9000 total cases at once would hit our max vent capacity.
We will probably be alright if we behave

Depends on if we successfully flatten the curve and slow this thing down or not. Keep in mind some of those 800 ventilators are being used to help patients with other diseases already.

I doubt the shortage is as severe as some say right now. It may get worse, but there arn't tens of thousands in ICU due to this virus.

Probably not even close.
My company (huge hospital operator) has thousands and they're trying to get thousands more.

Sort of. If we have 800 available RIGHT NOW, that means you can basically assume we maintain around 800 available at baseline even with background usage...because background usage is already happening.

i imagine background usage will decline as the months get warmer and non-COVID stuff decreases out of the sick season

What percentage of patients need the vent? From what I have seen, well over 80% are just being told to sleep it off at home. And I assume that not every hospitalization needs a vent.

Also very true, we are still intubating people for common winter illnesses

Alabama's biggest problem is going to be human resources, I think.
My institutions policy for isolation after caring for a positive patient is not sustainable for a real outbreak.
If we have to break that policy and then more HCP start getting ill and are out of the fight, we are in trouble.
