The skid plate comes off. It’s usually held on by 4 bolts.

Sounds like you found out what happened to your old belt. Yes. You have a bad compressor. Does it spin okay when the clutch isn't engaged?
If not take the belt back off.

And, if it does, put the belt on and unplug your compressor.
Btw, Napoleon, I installed the rear bearings in the front load at the camp a few weekends ago.
Like the last time, it was cake. If you've ever installed a sealed bearing in anything, you can beat these jokers out of and into the rear tub with no issues. Also, the bearings can be sourced at an auto parts store if you know the correct size. I think the seal has to come from the manufacturer.

This is a known issue in the 14-early year 16 5.3 L GM trucks.
A lot of people have gotten discounted replacement compressors from their dealer.
