What's the reason the 2 cops were sprinting at the beginning? Surely, not to catch those kids in the pool, is it?

yep. that's why they were called.
"hey 911, we got some black kids in the neighborhood pool for a pool party. come help us get rid of them"

Let me break this down for you.
1. Did the guy seriously over-react to the situation ? Yes
2. Was it the wrong decision to pull his gun now that we have the luxury of hindsight and breaking the video down step by step ? Sure it was the wrong decision.
3. Do any of us know that we would have reacted any differently when 4 people run up to you bouncing around screaming ? Nope. We do not.
4. Is the guy scum of the earth because he pulled his gun in that situation ? Absolutely not.
5. Should he be allowed to be a cop ? Debatable

I hate you for making me say anything to defend the guy but it looks like he's (not needed but....) walking the girl down the sidewalk when she tries to pull away and that's when it went bad. Then the gun gets grabbed when 2-3 teenage boys circle around behind him and start approaching the hip he has his weapon on.
The dude was entirely over the top, but there's also the common sense of not running up behind a cop in a situation where he's trying to restrain someone and has 4 people in his face.
Like I said earlier, letting the kids split and the girl run her mouth would've been plenty reasonable. Officer dug his own hole, but there was enough stupid to go around in that video.
