Why do companies do any of the "extra" benefits they give?

To compete and keep the best employees

Although I can understand your viewpoint, considering your team logo and all.

My wife just went back to work after taking her 12 weeks. She didn't get compensated at all.

You sound like a real swell guy. I don't even know how you can deduct this with such little information.

Stats show 1/3 of new mothers never go back to work. So Progressive has to spend more money and time hiring someone new(HR, recruiting fees, training). Guess where progressive is getting that money? Jacking up premiums from excising customers, whom some are mothers. So progressive is not the "hero" of this, it's the customers. It's all political.

Not true, only companies with 50 or more employees are obligated to give 12 weeks of unpaid leave.

Makes me shake my head when I hear people use maternity leave as an excuse for women to get paid less than men. I can think of several other reasons they get paid less, but maternity leave is not one of them.

The OT is right on schedule with the 2 down votes. Some of you are just plain pathetic.

Wife gives birth next week. 8 weeks off, because she's having a C-section, with zero pay. I don't know if she deserves full pay for that duration but the fact that she gets nothing is pretty messed up. And before you say she has a shitty job, she's an audiologist for a very reputable ENT.

My wife is a nurse at a hospital in NOLA and she only gets 8 weeks 100% paid and she can take an additional 8 weeks unpaid. Twelve weeks seems really good though.

I don't know why more companies aren't generous with their maternity leave. If you're a large company like Progressive the costs in the long run are extremely minimal.

But if you want to retain that talent or attract top new talent, that's a helluva plus to push.

All of these people who get paid are usually getting it through a short-term disability policy that is likely paid for by the company. They are very cheap relatively speaking, and insurance can be purchased on the open market to compensate you during maternity leave.

While I appreciate a company with good benefits, I think it is important for an employee to understand what can be done on their end to fill in the gaps. Hopefully you can find decent coverage for the next time, if their is a next time...

This country is arse backwards when it comes to paid time off for having a child. Time we catch up to the rest of the world on this one.

How about no. You have a child, you need to plan accordingly. It is not the responsibility of your employer or tax payers to pay for your leave.

This... I own a small business and I would be fricked if I had to allow an employee off for 12 weeks. I would have to hire someone else with the intent of laying them off after 12 weeks.

Out of generosity, I would probably give my male employees about 3 days off with pay and the rest of us would work double time.

While I agree it is not the responsibility of the employer, it is still a benefit that should be considered when comparing employers.

A company doesn't have to subsidize your healthcare premiums or offer/match your retirement plan, but they do that too.
