What happens when medical students don't match?

They get access to a list of unfilled spots called the SOAP or “scramble” and start doing phone calls to those programs immediately
And if that doesn’t work, they have to wait another year and try again

Same here.

So from how I understand it, thankfully I didn’t have to find out from first hand experience just from what happened to my roommate, once you find out you don’t match on Monday they send you the list of the unfilled programs. Then you get 45 application and you can start sending them out at 12 noon that day. The programs can then start calling unmatched applicants at 3pm the following day. That goes on until Thursday sometime. If you still haven’t gotten a spot then you can scramble until Friday at noon and start calling places and essentially begging for spots.
Thankfully that’s not me.

One year till my fiance goes through this. She's already stressing about it.

I’m pretty sure last weekend waiting on the “did I match email” was one of the most stressful times in my life

but on average Scruffy would say he enjoyed it.
That’s mainly because of co-residents. The work sucks, but Scruffy made good friends.
Some of my co-residents became my best friends, and I imagine they will be for the rest of my life.
The incessant mental and physical stress of it all really tests your mettle, and your true color is brought out. Going through 6 years of professional hazing together can forge a solid bond.

I match in next year. I’m going into internal so not worried so much as others trying for the surgical sub specialties.
