Driving along river road in West Baton Rouge I noticed an army core of engineers sign with Mat Sinking Unit this way on it. So, I had to look it up on the website. . I had no idea this was something that happens every year around this time. This whole time I though the levees kept the mississippi river in its place.

How much money is spent on this? Not to mention, how many people do this each year? is this all they do, just wait for mat sinking season? the river is thousands of miles long. they must do this on all the major rivers, right? so many questions.

They do.

And these mats keep the levees in place

Wish our forefathers would've just let the river be the giant beautiful beast it was intended to be. Too late to turn back now though.

I got intrigued by the Mat Sinking Unit last deer season. Mainly because they spent a couple weeks sinking mats right by my deer stand and scaring off all my deer. It is a neat deal. The crews of 300ish people live right there on the river in a quarter barge. Pretty fascinating watching man’s effort to control a raging river.

Don't they just do it in the heavy current areas?

I nominate Muscona. I'll even provide the Kwikcrete.

They do it in the scour areas that get cut away. They dredge the deposit areas.

Interesting. I bet that is expensive too, but definitely necessary.

Couldn't we save a ton of money if someone just develops a mat that doesn't float?

come on baw! that would never work, have to be able to float it precisely over the target spot before they can sink it!

They did. Therefore the OP's thread is not titled Mat Floating Unit.
