Massive crane just collapsed in NYC

A construction crane collapsed into the street in lower Manhattan shortly before 8:30 a.m. ET this morning, killing one and injuring at least two others. The cause of the accident is as yet unclear, but a witness tells New York Daily News that the crane—which reads "Bay Cranes" on its side—came down over the course of five or six seconds, hitting a building and some power lines on its way to the ground.

The Gothamist reports that complaints had been filed against the building using the crane on January 31, when the crane was in operation before permits were issued. The building was reportedly using the crane to move emergency generators from the basement to the roof in order to prevent issues during flooding.

There's no word on the extent of the property damage, but photos of the scene—which are popping up all over Twitter and Instagram and show the crane atop rows of parked cars—speak for themselves:
