Google big blue crane and watch that thing go. Trying to make a pick in high winds. Three people killed.

That thing in Manhattan is huge. Would like to know the rating of the crane.

Looks like it scraped the face of the buildings on the way down. That's a lot of collateral and superficial damage, which isn't a big deal, but it'll be expensive.

That sucks. Hope no one was hurt.

judging from a Bay Crane video is appears to be a Liebherr LR 1300 which has a 330 ton lifting capacity at 14.7 ft. According the the specifications the max lifting height is 564 ft and the total boom feet is 878 feet.

I know some of the crane companies that we use for jobs carry typically a $10,000,000 general liability policy with 50 to 100 million umbrella depending on which crane they are running.

Wonder if there was a crane operator inside at the time? If so, he's almost certainly the fatality.

The collapse killed one man who was sitting in his car, de Blasio said, and injured three others. Two are in serious condition, while the third person had minor injuries. The people who were hurt were hit by falling debris, and the mayor said all of them were bystanders.

Any mechanical engineers here?

I'm curious about these crane collapses that have happened recently. It seems to me their would be one of three root causes for them, structural frame failure of the tube metal, bolt(hinge or otherwise) shears or the base instability causing them to tip and possibly over strain the structure.

There have been a couple of NY, and there was a big one recently in Mecca or someplace(over there) that killed a large number.

I doubt that was a mechanical failure. I'll go with operator error.

so how does the operator do that then?

Over loading? That's human error.. check.. out of range operation?

There have been a lot of these failure lately when it used to be a real rarity, that's not to say it's necessarily a "phenomenon" as it might simply be a factor of greatly increased usage(more construction), my "gut" tells me there will be an outcry from the usual places(government) for more regulation, which is of course the universal answer for everything from them.

Too much load? Shitty ground man on the other end of the radio?

My only reason for thinking it wasn't mechanical or structural failure was the rate it fell. It just kind of tipped over.

It wasn't even lifting anything. That is absurd.

The right way (safe way) to bring it down is to barricade off and close the length of road in which this thing could potentially (and did) fall down like that. You're right in saying it's a line of fire issue.
