I went on one once. It had a canvas top supported by metal poles... but nothing on the sides like this one. They do that to make customers more comfortable I guess... keep the sun off you. But in a situation like this one, having it completely enclosed became a death trap.

Have you ever swam in any type of current? Looking at the video you would have to jump in 500 yards up river in order to make it to the boat. And that’s if you even make it.
You would need to have high-level / coast guard training to even attempt something like that.
Yeah, no one from that showboat dinner cruise had any chance of swimming out to the duck boat with a life vest on in time to help... they'd be swimming against the wind/current the whole time. They'd just turn themselves into another person that needed rescuing.

Yes, you are correct and it’s sickening. These fat retards are so obsessed with filming things for Facebook, they are willing to watch children drown and not do shite to help.
It appears that there was a boat, which could be a rescue boat, about 20 yards behind the duck boat.

Agree. Nothing you can do watching from the restaurant. Though I’d be getting super antsy watching this whole scene play out.
If I was in that boat, the first time my feet got wet I’m in exit mode. I’d tell the captain to F off. Not to mention you’re at eye level with water and waves, just sitting there and watching in a tin can.

I could be wrong, but it looked to me like a ski boat or something similar. Hard to tell for sure in the quick glance given in the video

So, it appears to me after watching the video, that it may have been one of those "everyone please stay calm and please stay seated" scenarios that went badly. From the video, its pretty clear that there was a point where, and the captain you would think had to see this, the bow of the boat was heavy and obviously starting to take water. At that point you get folks out of that boat as quickly as possible. They all would have already had the pfd's on at that point, right???
This ride obviously attracts families, with small children, with a PFD or not as rough as that ocean was if they abandon the vessel children would likely have died, period. That has to be a hard call to make if you think you have any chance of keeping the boat afloat.

Id like to think the captain signaled for help as soon as the boat started struggling. That would give rescuers 4 minutes to get there. Not sure what response times should be, but that seems about the time.

I see tear away velcro-ed canvas tops coming to any that are still out there, no way I'd take on the liability of putting folks in a floating coffin with someone that took a one day coast guard captains class but I'm sure someone out will still be doing it.

Right.
I know hindsight is 20/20 but if me and my family were on that boat we would have jump in the water as soon as I recognized the boat was going down. But me and my family are very good swimmers and I know that is not an option for some of the passengers.

Yes.
In fact in high school and college I windsurfed and used to pray for storms like that (with a short board and tiny sail). With that said when you are seeking that kind of weather you are prepared as in trained, proper equipment, and in good physical shape.

By all accounts, the staff and people on the Showboat Branson Belle took many aboard and saved as many lives as they could. For reference, this is what that boat looks like...
Y'all are dumb if you think the old people in the video should have done anything more than they did. They would have just gotten in the way of the staff on the boat who are probably much more trained than they are. And, as many have said, no chance they could simply jump overboard and swim to the other boat without dying themselves.

That's why I said in my post, "I know that is not an option for some of the passengers".

But there were 18 survivors so that must have been an option from some of the other passengers. They were probably strong swimmers and/or donned PFDs in sufficient time.

Apparently, this particular storm was warned 30 minutes before it hit. Someone belongs in jail.

Yeah. I'm laughing at all these billy badasses saying the people on that boat should have done more.

Makes sense. Just sit there and watch kids drown
ETA: also film it and upload it to your Facebook like the original fat retard did

Yea the legal ramifications after this are going to be interesting

I was on a pontoon boat in this lake all day yesterday.
Got a weather alert at 6:30 and went to marina and parked.
I can tell you the wind and water got extremely bad about 7:00.
Knocked some trees down on the lakeside where we are staying.
Feel horrible for those people on that duck.

These people are sitting there at the dinner table.
You expect them to run outside, conveniently find a pfd because you know those are just always lying around, and jump into that water and swim to that boat?
Your heart is in the right spot but its not logical. You would have just become another person to rescue

He is actually fat
He would have jumped in and likely caused the death of someone else trying to rescue his fat self
