My neighbor is a real estate agent in Slidell/lacombe and she said the only time she’s been this busy this time of year was after Katrina. She said she usually vacationing this time of year because business is So slow.
Just about every buyer that she’s dealing with is coming out of Orleans Parish. Many from uptown.
They tell her that they’re getting out while the gettin’s good. Crime is a big reason but the covid got some of them thinking about having more space.
Weird thing is that no one has had trouble selling their Orleans homes. Demand is there so Prices holding steady.
I wonder how long that will last?

How re: renters?

Housing costs too much and we have wage stagnation bc many jobs are service industry and hospitality.
its almost like if you provide people with an opportunity to operate an STR they could afford the rising costs.
the biggest issue was not that STRs existed, it was that lower-income and the uneducated didnt have the proper resources to run their own. savvy middle class people were buying them in droves and displacing the people at the bottom

yeah you can't argue "Nola has limited space" and then act like STR proliferation won't have a major increase in costs
i guess renters can "own and run a STR" and that will be the response

This would be a really dumb response

why?
i own property, i allow my renters to run an airbnb out of it...the only issue is that I need to be the one that signs them up for the service and they cant do it themselves

not an accurate argument
housing prices were RISING before STRs
they are also still RISING now despite the new laws.

Sounds like some anecdotal BS. No one is moving from Uptown to Slidell

that was the push, but i think that peaked years ago and has decreased dramatically since. the article 08 posted was in 2017, so it likely was using 2016 data
Acrruent deal announced 2018 - occupancy 2019 EY Resource Center
Two deals above were significant and after your dates. Both entry level tech positions which we need to build workforce. Both had strong potential for growth. Accruant was at 150 pre-covid. Hope to get to 300 in the CBD

Why? Because not everyone wants to run an STR

I own my condo and I don’t want that hassle...and even if I had a lower income service industry job, I still wouldn’t want that hassle. Also, the types of STR’s that make good money aren’t the types that would be available...no one wants to stay in a dingy bedroom in MidCity or Bywater or St Roch etc.

that's a hilarious response for my post
where is Accurent HQ'd? Austin
so Nola gets 150 entry level positions while their metro competitor HQs the company sending those jobs

we own a condo in the warehouse dist and we arent allowed to rent it out short term...3 month minimum. I wouldn't want to deal with that shite on a daily or weekly basis either

Post em.
I’m glad you had success with it, but you aren’t the rule here and I think your views on everyone in the city just up and running their own STR is far too idealistic. You 1) owned your own properties which most people in the city don’t and 2) had the time and desire to host people which most homeowners both rich and poor don’t want.
Edit: the STR issue also just isn’t about homeowners and renters running them. Neighbors don’t want them in their neighborhoods and I don’t really blame them. That was another big reason for the crackdown.
