I was in from 2006-2014 and saw a dramatic change from the quality of recruits that I went to bootcamp with to the ones who started coming in around 2011 or so. It sucks to admit, but the Marine Corps is rapidly becoming the same as the Army, Navy, Air Force, & Coast Guard.

Is this objective.. or are you getting old and doing the "back in my day" thing?

WW1 vets made fun of the WW2 recruits for being soft and coddled. It's a cycle that repeats ad nauseum. Since the beginning of recorded history old people have been bitching about the generations that follow them.

As we age we look at our hardships as being harder and our triumphs greater than they were in reality

Hazing is for closeted men who want some man-play without the label.

If I were a marine, I'd protest against this. I'd neel during our ceremonies

No, I'm not retarded. The standards stopped being upheld as rigorously as they were. The Marine Corps started recruiting for specific factors like race, gender, and ethnic background rather than targeting recruits that wanted to join because they simply wanted to earn the title. It stopped being "earn the title" and started being "well, we're too white-male dominated so here ya go."

Well let's see...WWII people were in the middle of the depression. They didn't have a pot to piss in. They eradicated the world of some of the most evil men in history. Then, that generation was the generation that brought us out of the depression, led us in the arms and space race, landing us on the moon. They were also for the most part in power throughout the Cold War which left us as the world's single greatest military force and economic power the world has ever seen. I'd say that their hardships and triumphs were greater than anything any generation since then has accomplished.

The Army by 2012 was almost certainly not as good as it was in 2000 or so.

There are a lot of reasons for that, some of which has to do with the quality of recruiting, but by almost any objective measure (average PT score, number of wash outs, difficulty in training, ability to execute core tasks, etc., etc.), it's true. It's been a rather significant issue in the Pentagon.

What kind of Marine can't swim!?

All Marines can swim. Some have to learn during recruit training. As for the incident in question, it was dark, it was a swamp, and they were wearing full combat gear. A little different than swimming in a pool.

Most on this board don't have a clue.

It's not brainwashing, not hazing, not about being intimidated into following orders. The Marine Corps is all about getting the toughest jobs done with maximum speed and efficiency while violating every known order and rule you can think of and ignoring whether the job is impossible.

So what's the point of the harassment? When you leave Parris Island or Dago you will never be intimidated by anyone or anything. Ever. Not that week, not 60 years later. Not your boss, not some guy who might think he's tougher because he's 100 pounds bigger.
I say thank you to my DI every day.

Great, but suicidal people don't belong there. That's the real issue here, the fact that they didn't weed out this guy beforehand.

If you're having suicidal thoughts during boot camp; you need to be kicked out and get some other help.

Sounds like he just wanted to quit. I think the death could have been prevented but I don't think this was hazing

I'd slow the roll about today's Marines and other military personnel being soft. They've been doing the deed in various shitholes around the world for about 15 years now. Whatever their basic training was like, they've earned their stripes where it counted.

"Back in my day" folks. I served in the AF, and I enjoyed not having to deal with the foolery. I salute the combat troops, b/c I wasn't having any parts of that.
