General Carl was a great man who died at the hands of a punk.

He was a WWII ace with 16.5 kills. He then became the Marine's first test pilot where he set records (including one that was broken by Chuck Yeager). He was a Brigadier General when Vietnam started, but he still flew both helicopters and jets in combat (including flying with my Dad).

When he was 82, a 19 year old home invader entered his house and was threatening Gen. Carl's wife Edna with a shotgun. In defense of his wife, Gen. Carl lunged at the attacker. Gen. Carl ended up being murdered. The attacker was sentence to death, but it was ultimately commuted to life without parole.

In cleaning out some old boxes, I came across these Vietnam photos of Dad with Gen. Carl (and Gen. Lew Walt) with the two men who were still flying combat missions with their pistols.

I wish I could pull off wearing a bandolier.

Wouldn’t work with cargo shorts and a t-shirt.

Hang the SOB by his nuts

BTW, if the Brig. General in your pic didn’t have a call sign of “Vampire” or “Werewolf”, an unbelievable opportunity was missed. ;)

He'll be the next nominee for the Senate race in Maine.

I see 18.5, good enough for 7th for the USMC (tied with Wilbur Thomas) for the war (in rarefied company):

Boyington (28, counting his kills with the Tigers)
Foss, 26
Hanson, 25
Walsh, 21
Aldrich, 20
Smith, 19
Carl, 18.5

I have the pistol (S and W .38) and the shoulder holster, but could never find the bandolier.

Memories you do not get.
