This is inherently untrue, although I understand why you feel this way.
There are things that need government regulation and intervention....marijuana and other mind altering substances being one of them. However, our government has gone so far with regulation that I completely understand why people say that we need 0 government regulation on anything....but it is inherently incorrect.
ETA That said marijuana will need to be taxed at least similarly to tobacco if not more. I say more because it will be desirable to more people than tobacco is/was obviously. The only issue I have is as people have stated it will line a lot of peoples pockets. I wish there were some way to totally ear mark marijuana tax money for education, infrastructure improvements, etc....things that really benefit the people.
You just have to be careful with taxation on it so that you don't create some type of underground black market for a "legal" drug.

As soon as big tobacco gets on board they will all fall in line.....I'm honestly surprised it hasn't already happened with the declining sales in tobacco over the last decade.
Big tobacco is already on board. They've bought up 10s of thousands of patents, land for growing, grow infrastructure, etc. and are just sitting on it until it is taken off of Schedule 1.
There is a banking issue for them while it remains Schedule 1.
ETA:
Big Pharma is what is trying to shut this shite down. They've dumped billions into anti-legalization lobbies. Next would be the private prison lobby. And then alcohol brands, but they aren't nearly as powerful.

They have the resources and power to make that happen.

No they don't.
They are up against some equally as powerful or more powerful lobbies AND the old guard in congress still thinks weed is the devil, which doesn't help.

Wrong. Free markets need no regulation. They regulate themselves.

Again as a citizen of the USA I understand why you feel this way....even if it is incorrect.
ETA And for what it's worth I agree with you that government has gotten way too big in the last half a century in this country (really since FDR)....BUT blowing out all regulation is not the answer....most sure.

Friend,
Let’s hope this bill is swiftly defeated. I continue to contact my Congress person urging that person to keep all bars closed as well as push for the end of alcohol sales in our state. We would be a far greater state if our citizens were chaste, sober, and saw the benefit of the good life.
Yours,

The funny thing is he posts a lot of cool, memory-inducing nostalgia lists from the greater New Orleans area....but let's be real most of those places probably don't exist without tourism, and tourism in New Orleans isn't what it is today without the drinking and general debauchery that the city is known for.
For better or worse it is what it is.

I'm always amazed at the lack of understanding of our gov't, economy, and history. People just assume that since some segment of gov't exists, that we need it and it's always been there or, even worse, that since something needs to be done and only gov't can do it. The FDA is a perfect example of this. The market existed and functioned perfectly OK for 120 years before the FDA was created and given control.

Yeah, I have no understanding of our government, economy, and history because I disagree with your view.

Pretty sure any number of R SML replacements would have the exact same track record. KY should primary his old arse and get some forward thinking new blood in his seat.

The KY GOP will never run anyone viable against him. Ever. They don’t want to give him up as Majority Leader and to run against him in party is pretty much a sin to them.
And the DNC is too in love with the McGrath’s of the world (gross) to back a viable Democrat against him.
He’ll likely die in that seat.

So are you trying to convince me that culture, capitalism, technology, society, and people in general haven't changed since 1906?

Bill Passes House
Too bad it won’t go further
quote:
On Friday the U.S. House passed a historic bill that would end the federal prohibition of marijuana and expunge many cannabis-related convictions. It’s the first time the full House has considered —let alone passed — such a bill. The Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act (MORE Act), made it through the House by a 228 to 164 vote. Nearly every Democrat supported the measure, while just five Republicans voted for it. Six Democrats voted against the bill.
