I'm looking at a used '22 Yukon that has a clean Carfax, 1 owner, great service history, but when the dealership bought it from the first owner, the record just says "Manufacturer Buyback or Lemon Reported".

I've asked the dealership for some details here and awaiting response, but there are no major repairs in it's history.

I'm guessing this means I should run the hell away from the car. Also explains probably why it's been on the lot for 150 days and is priced really well.

Also has no outstanding recalls and has had no significant recall work performed. Just seems contradictory. It's also very low mileage. Previous owner put less than 40k on it and it had steady mileage amounts each year.

I am on full alert here and probably will run away, but just curious if that phrase could mean something pretty benign or if it's always really bad

Has the engine been replaced? And is it the 6.2? If so, they may have bought it, drove it home, the engine came apart, and the owners said "nope, not keeping this" and the dealership wound up buying it back. There are stories out there of the 6.2 coming apart on the way home from the dealership after purchase.

And then you need to decide if the headache that is the GM v8 will be ok in your life for however long you would keep it.

GM has had issues with OEM parts shortage. Curious if it needed a part but it was on back order for a few months so they bought it back. Mine sat for 5 weeks waiting on something with the valve body. Stories online of people waiting 6+ months at one point.

5.3

Doesn't have the bad engine history of the 6.2

Can't tell if engine has been replaced. I'll see what dealership says.

The 5.3 in RWD with low mileage from 2022 would be fine for my wife. That's presuming it's not a damn lemon

That would be a great outcome.

Maybe it's still awaiting a part that isn't some signal of overall poor engine health but they haven't gotten it yet.

Let me say one thing. The salesman will say absolutely whatever it takes to get you to buy the vehicle. They give ZERO frickS if it is true or not and good luck trying to take action later based on "the salesman told me so and so..." Because that dude will be long gone to another car sales job by that point.

I wouldn't buy without the story. And if they hide it, that would not make me feel really easy about it.

The 22' will also be a model year with the most trouble out of the 10 speed transmission. 2020 to 2022 had valve body faults more severe than the other years.

It could be something as simple as someone bought something they 100 percent couldn't afford and just brought it back after the buyers remorse set in.

5.3 still has it's known issues as well as torque converter and trans issues.

I will call the dealer that originally sold the vehicle, and the dealer that bought it back. Request the repair order.

I want a 5.3 from 2023, but haven't found the right price/mileage anywhere.

ChatGPT seems to think 2022 is pretty reliable relative to other years, but does say '23 is best of that body style. Says '22 is second best.

The more I dig into all vehicle makes and models, the more I realize they basically all have some "known issues". It's infuriating

Never good, almost always really bad. A lot of states require a branded title for buyback/lemon law cars.

Ok Chat says "warranty claim history / manufacturer service history" won't always appear with details on Carfax so I need to get that from the dealership. It could sometimes just appear as regular servicing.

I've said it a couple times here and always get blasted. All of the major manufacturers have known issues with their vehicles. Engine, trans, something.

It's also the internet, no one pops in and says 22 Silverado, drove to work and back today, nothing to report. You only hear the negative on the web, have to wade through all that bullshite.

Even the ticking time bomb 6.2 is 3% failure rate. 3% across all vehicles sold. The internet would have you believe they are slinging rods like hot cakes.

I wouldn't do it, but I've read that some states have ridiculously low bars for lemon law buybacks, others pretty strict. I feel like I'd always be looking over my shoulder with it though, so no go for me.

Whatever you are saving isn't worth the potential headache plus you will always be thinking about it having problems. Pass for greater peace in your life
