Man tried to drown himself in a pool, but sues police who waited too long to help

I read the full story on this at another link.
This asshat has a manic episode and is trying to drag people into the pool. The police are standing back because, you know, fighting a crazy man in the deep end of the pool isn't a great idea. He finally goes under and they drag him out a short time later. He now says they should have gone in, fought him and gotten him out sooner.
I swear that the police really can't win. If they take on a crazy guy and he gets hurt, they get sued. If they stand back and the crazy guy gets hurt, they get sued. Not sure what option they have.
