Based on how the OP operates, I can guess the following without opening the link:

1) The kids is likely a minority
2) the old a-hole is white
3) the only reason this made news is because of races involved
4) Everyone on the OT will say the guy is a prick and not defend him
5) I will agree the guy is a-hole with everyone else and kids should be allowed to fish instead of doing stupid shite
6) Some moderate in the thread will chime in and say the old man is a racist trump supporter

Am I 6/6?

Correct.

We have a huge pond in my hood that kids/families fish all the time. When my son was younger, he and his friends got yelled at (and I got a phone call) from a pissed off neighbor that they went on the edge of her property while walking around the pond.

The races were reversed in this case. Yes, like many in BR, I live in a diverse neighborhood. I didn't run to national media despite thinking she was a bitch.

The threat was stupid, but the report doesn’t touch on if the neighborhood pond was public or if place the kid was fishing in the pond was public land or sidewalk

Looking at some photos of the park/pond online shows a sign saying it's a private pond owned by the club. The sign also says "No Fishing, No Swimming, No Boating".

Wonder if the 14 year old lived in the neighborhood? It's the Onion Creek golf club subdivision off I-35 in Austin. Guy was still an a-hole for how he handled it, no matter what the situation was.

The state parks just answered the question about what age needs a fishing license. That’s only thing I remember living in a neighborhood with ponds is that sometimes instead of staying right off the public sidewalk kids went onto private property including getting in the way of golfers right near the greens or onto HOA private property and not living in the the neighborhood that owed it (or not an area anyone should be regardless). While behaving at times some kids would also act like little shits to some of the people living right there and the golfers (parents usually fixed that crap quickly). Better ways to deal with these situations than to threaten to drown a kid, but in this case it seems like if public and kid was always exactly where he was allowed and should be an arrest or citation would have been made especially in Austin even if just a misdemeanor. It seems like they just looked at video and didn’t investigate or talk to the guy which is strange if kid was always in the right.

Everybody involved was White, but anyway, if I had come home and told my Dad that Gene Wills or whoever told me that they were going to drown me for fishing in their pond, my Dad would have said " I couldn't get that lucky.".

We used to have no fishing signs around our neighborhood lakes and the subdivision Facebook site would debate whether kids should fish or not. Usually the Karen’s complaining got shot down because the signs were just to keep the non-residents or riff raff out. As some have commented, this activity is way better for kids than gaming, etc. It can turn into a positive, life long hobby.

PS the no fishing signs were removed by the HOA because of the debate.

Kid should have hit him across the nose with that fishing rod.

Years ago in my hometown there was a man that got whipped with a graphite rod. It cut him all to pieces.

Guy was obviously an a-hole. But if you don’t defend your neighborhood pond the next thing you know you’ll have a dozen people out there with cane poles sitting on plastic buckets.

100% this, and I speak from experience.

That's 2 violent threats, in the state of Texas.

The kid's dad can go fishing with the kid next time and legally execute the fricker.

Based on the downvote to upvote ratio, the OT does not seem to agree with you.

C minus for effort.

What’s your point? Someone also said the old man is a Lib. A few people who look at everything through a political lens will continue to make anything political, even on the OT.

The reddit sub, r/neighborfromhell is filled with stories of people who live next door to assholes who constantly complain about kids playing in their own yards.
