He survived because his intercom headset and other headgear was sucked in first, that destroyed the engine in a fraction of the second. If you watch closely you can see everything coming off his head before he goes in, and the engine explodes out the exhaust a fraction of a second before he fully disappears into the intake.

That guy is lucky he lived. I have seen a video of the aftermath of someone going through an engine. It was basically a pile of ground meat and blood on the ground
