He set up to far away from it loosing some of the power the machine has. He should have been able to get into it with enough time etc. I wonder if they are just saying he didn't get into it to keep other from attempting it.

It's been done before in Texarkana, except with a forklift and a stolen U-haul truck. Knock over the ATM, lift with forklift, place in back of U-haul, then drive away.
