A man doused himself with gasoline and set himself on fire Thursday night at a north Alabama Walmart, police said.

Athens Fire and Rescue responded to a call around 6:41 p.m. Thursday that a man may have covered himself in fuel before setting himself on fire. Responders found the man outside on the northeast side of the Athens Walmart, fire officials said.

Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said bystanders told officers the man doused himself with gasoline, ran into Walmart, came back out into the parking lot and set himself on fire. No bystanders were injured. Four police officers used fire extinguishers from their vehicles to put out the fire.

Why did he drive so far north? This sounds like something Florida Man would do.

Crazy. That's my hometown.

It's sad, but every year it seems there's at least one person who steps out in front of a train in Athens and commits suicide. The CSX line that runs through town is very busy since it leads to the rail bridge over the Tennessee River, so there are a lot of trains.

I think the most fricked up thing about this story is that, I drove past a Wal-Mart today....really puts things in perspective.

If you’ve ever been held hostage in a Walmart by your wife for 3 hours, you’d consider setting yourself on fire as a way out.

So I will say this. He did not first kill a significant other. He did not kill an adversary, he did not kill a child, and he did not do terrorist activities. He simply killed himself. Awesome. This is how it should be.
