I live close to the airport. Couldn’t imagine the horror of seeing a human falling from the sky

I’m wondering if he was trying to ascertain the status of the the landing gear or manually lower it and somehow accidentally fell whilst doing so?

This theory makes a lot of sense. I can't imagine a trained co-pilot jumping out instead of taking the plane down to try to land.
