They don't turn them off... and no tech called him into the room unless he was purposely trying to kill him
As Bestbank said, tech probably didn’t expect him to be wearing a 20 lb chain.

Why wouldn’t the tech turn off the machine before he called in the husband?
You cant turn it off
Its a liquid helium cooled superconducting magnet that is always on
It is a long and costly process to shut it down and get it back running. Like weeks.

I read another version of this where the man went in without permission due to his wife panicking, but I can’t remember the source of this version.

Except that it’s happened before.
A tech calling in some random person to the MRI room without even checking for metallic objects?
The original story that I heard on the radio was that the guy heard or thought he heard her screaming and he busted in to see what was going on after being told to not enter

This is much more likely. Though any door to gain access to magnet should be locked.

Thats gonna be a hell of a lawsuit if they really let an unscreened person near the magnet
Serious case of neckligence

Maybe the wife is lying about the story then hoping for a huge payout
The story for me here is the 20 lb chain.

The man was wearing a large metal chain and entered a room without authorization as the MRI machine, which uses a strong magnetic field, was running at a medical office in Westbury on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Not always possible. You cant just lock people in a room. I've worked around MRIs and you have to go in and out from the MRI to the control room. Its not possible to keep it locked up.

The woman that had an MRI with a metal butt plug was a better story

No. A 6 year old boy was killed while getting an MRI when an oxygen tank was sucked into the machine.

From your link,
Does seem negligent but I don’t know the practicalities of managing that type of area.

Mr. McAllister was a 61 year old weightlifter who was taking anabolic steroids for many years. During that time, his roid rage was on full display as he became more and more emotionally abusive towards Mrs. McAllister. In recent months, Mr. McAllister's roid rage went from making him be not only emotionally abusive but also physically on multiple occasions. In fact, Mrs. McAllister was getting an MRI to assess her injuries after her "accidental" fall down the "stairs" a few weeks ago. Over the time she was being treated, she developed a romantic interest in and subsequently engaged in adulterous acts with the MRI technician. When Mrs. McAllister informed the MRI technician during some wine-induced pillow talk about Mr. McAllister's physical abuse towards her, the MRI technician inquired about whether Mr. McAllister owned a substantial life insurance policy. Indeed, he did. So the two planned the events of that fateful day. They scheduled the appointment on Neck Day at a time when they knew Mr. McAllister would be at the gym lifting and wearing the 20 pound chain. (Their young son, Kevin, would be Home Alone that day.) They called Mr. McAllister to the hospital suggesting an urgent issue was detected during the MRI scan. The rest, as they say, is history...
Allegedly...
In a book I read.
