You are more likely to get an infection from a cat scratch or bite than a dog. Cats are just gross animals and not a friend of humans. Do not trust them.

This guy and his doctor are stupid. Cats are domestic animals and largely assholes known to scratch people. From the location of the scratch, I’m guessing he reached his hand toward an unknown cat, which is asking for it. Nothing out of the ordinary happened. The odds of coming across a cat around your house are quite a bit higher than, say, a racoon. If he encountered a non-domestic animal, that would be unusual, as they almost always keep their distance. If he was attacked by one, then freak out, because if a squirrel or raccoon comes looking for trouble, there’s something wrong.

Not an emergency, wait and see your primary care and pay a normal amount.

The ER is never the answer unless it's an EMERGENCY.

Emergency rooms are expensive a.f. because of all the costs it takes to run one so they have to puh those costs down. I have great insurance but I am in for at least a grand if I go to an emergency room

So wait you think people should call their insurance to get a medical opinion?

Eta: Insurance companies exist to make money, more specifically make money on ensuring your receive as little care as possible.

No, you need 10 of them over the course of weeks. Even then, you'd still stand a great chance of dying if you are infected. Rabies is exceedingly rare in the US, and the vaccine is avoided unless there is good reason to believe that the animal is infected and symptomatic.

TL;DR this guy's doctor is either dumb or lazy.

That is the vaccine and the schedule is not 10 injections. Postexposure prophylaxis is just 4 doses now. Day 0, then days 3, 7 and 14 (some still give day 28 dose). They would infiltrate rabies immune globulin around (item on the bill) the wound on the first visit.

The globulin comes in a 10cc vial. The patient will get charged for the entire vial even if it isnt all used because we cannot reuse it on another patient.

Insurers should not be responsible for covering emergency department level services for shite like uncomplicated cat scratches and canker sores. I have no problem with a prior authorization being required before you get an ER bed for a bo-bo and an overdue TDaP.
