To be honest, what other reason would a guy riding the train with his family attack a homeless person for?
I personally would never engage a homeless person for fear of contracting some disease.

Such a scenario wouldn't surprise me.
My wife was on the E train a few months back and some homeless guy got on (thanks DeBlasio, you piece of shite), sat across from her and started arguing with the air. At one point he looked at her and yelled "TALK TO MY DICK, MOTHERfrickER!"

Kind of agree with this.
I'm guessing that a look into both their backgrounds will reveal similar behavior for whomever started this.
