Did anyone see that 60 Minutes about the US basically quadrupling our forces in the Arctic Circle? Basically Russia just claims all/most of it and its resources, so there is a tense standoff up there. That is a 3 front war. Ukraine/Gaza/Arctic. Tensions are building/coming to a head in all 3. What would a war look like between two modern countries these days? Scary as shite.

Ok, how about "thug" or "goon" does that work for you? Being a dictator and abusing countries with inferior capabilities to his own still does not make him a "badass." It makes him a fricking punk.

Russia, trending downward.

Despite these strengths, however, the Russian economy is far from invulnerable. Not all the reserves are available for intervention, since $175 billion are earmarked in two wealth funds which cushion the budget and cover future pension spending. If capital flight continues at its current rate, the central bank will face a harsh choice: it can either expend its reserves to keep the rouble stable or allow the currency to drop, which will add to inflation and could precipitate a domestic banking crisis.

Russia’s economy is navigating an economic downturn with real GDP growth slowing to an estimated 1.3 percent in 2013 from 3.4 percent of 2012. The lack of more comprehensive structural reforms has led to the erosion in businesses’ and consumers’ confidence

The ruble isn't worth the paper its printed on.

The country's educated and wealthy are leaving.

Foreign investors are thinking twice.

Its death rate and life expectancy are alarmingly bad.

Russia is one of the ultimate handouts countries in the world with its people needing money from their gov't.

Russia was so desperate to increase its population due to it shrinking so fast they opened up their borders to all ex soviet countries to move there.

A devastating loss in the fight against AIDS. Many on board the Malaysian plane that was shot down over Ukraine were the world's top AIDS researchers. CLEVE JONES, SAN FRANCISCO AIDS FOUNDATION CO-FOUNDER, SAYING: "It's just heartbreaking. We're a family." The scientists were headed to the 20th International AIDS Conference in Melbourne. Among the dead, Dr. Joep Lange, former IAS President and prominent HIV researcher. CLEVE JONES, SAN FRANCISCO AIDS FOUNDATION CO-FOUNDER, SAYING: "The loss of his expertise and leadership is a blow that I-I just I don't know how we will replace him... We're dedicated to eradicating HIV/AIDS and today that-that um, hoped for outcome seems even further away." It's believed about 100 passengers on board the Malaysian flight were headed to the conference.
So sad.

it seems that usually the victims are identified quicker than this, at least nationalities. why the wait to confirm americans were on board? is this a privacy issue and they are waiting until the families are informed, or just taking longer than normal to confirm?

Just terrible.

The article states:
quote:

Among the 298 people killed were 154 from the Netherlands; 43 people, including 15 crew and two infants, from Malaysia; 27 from Australia; 12 people, including one infant, from Indonesia; 9 from the United Kingdom; 4 from Germany; 4 from Belgium; 3 from the Philippines; 1 from Canada; and 41 people “unverified.”

Maybe the US is taking a very different approach here since it was shot down and not a plane malfunction issue.

Just like when some reported that 20 passengers on the Malaysian flight that disappeared worked for electronic warfare and military radar firms?

Let the conspiracy theories begin!

Didn't read the whole thread, but saw your post (sevendust quoted) about the AIDS researchers aboard this plane.

How fricking strange is it that some of the top AIDS experts were also on TWA flight 800.

A calculated approach is exactly what we're taking. We signed the Budapest Memorandum in 1994 that spelled out our potential involvement in the region. To sum it up, we are obligated as a superpower to provide security assurance against any threats or use of force against the territorial or political independence of Ukraine. If it comes down to them verifying that Russian weapons were knowingly given to Pro-Russian Separatists in the region were used in this attack (regardless if it was an "accident" or not), according to the treaty we're obligated to act. Curious to see what conspires
