I genuinely don't know why people on this board cannot understand this.

It's a hard life for those guys. The ones that are working journeyman for a local company, 40 hours with minimal OT/weekend work are either getting paid lower than market rate or they are incredibly lucky.

its because the OT struggles with statistics overall. its hard for them to go look what the median pay is for trades and say ok...maybe i was wrong and Mike Rowe doesnt know everything.

also the OT is full of guys who never worked the trades so they dont understand how hard the work is

and lastly the OT is general has a much higher education level than most of Louisiana(although the OT population has become more blue collar, point still stands) and they way underestimate how hard running a business is for most and struggle to grasp the amount of businesses in the trades that fail within 3 years.

They don’t struggle with them, they remain willfully ignorant of the statistics they don’t like and run fully on emotion. And many are just straight up liars.

This. Men weren’t made to sit indoors or trapped in offices 24/7, sitting idle, and staring at a computer screen.

This type of attitude is exactly why men are falling behind.

I worked in warehouses for 8 years. I drove machinery, I unloaded trucks on a busy dock, I had a job that kept me busy doing various tasks. One of my warehouse jobs was at a plumbing supply store, dispatching drivers, unloading trucks, talking to tradespeople.

The jobs were fine. I was making shite. The plumbers were making more, but most of them weren't making any more than $20 an hour. The foremen and owners were obviously making way more, but most of them walked with a limp, had a substance abuse problem, and were surrounded by dickheads all day.

It's not a life you want. There were some really good guys there, and I'll tell you most of them looked out of place. Honestly, most of them would have been better off doing a job that required more aptitude, like sitting in an office and doing work that the tradespeople i was around didn't have the aptitude for. Actuarial work, accounting, operations management, attorneys, etc.

By reinforcing this stereotype that men do manual labor, you're giving men a free pass to be shite heads in school. You're giving them free passes to shirk responsibility because they are just going to do a trade or work a physically demanding job. They're never going to use math, so why bother. Which by the way is a load of shite.

I think there are a lot of things wrong with the way the school system teaches kids, but the fact is that the differences between men and women (and there are differences) are FAR overstated precisely because men have been telling men their entire lives that they need more stimulus and that school and "office jobs" aren't for them. You know who are typically the best performing kids in school? Boys. The worst? Boys

agree with all of this big time

its funny.....go ask the guy at the gas station at 445am in august if they wish they wouldnt have been the class clown and could work in an office all day making 2x as much. I promise 99% would take that deal in a heart beat

I mean, Do you have a son in school today? They aren’t treated like boys. They are treated like defective girls.

I don't. I have a nephew in school who is struggling mightily. Not the same thing, I get that.

quote:

And if they don’t get with the program, you’ll have female teachers and administrators telling you to medicate them.

As far as medication, I was tested for ADHD in 1st grade, and they told my mom to medicate me. She did not because she didn't believe it should be done.

I didn't do anything in high school. Nothing. I didn't do homework, I didn't study for tests, most of the time I was late, and in when I was in class I talked to my friends. I did just enough as far as attendance and grades to play football. I got incredibly lucky that I can retain information with little effort, or else I would not have graduated.

You know who doesn't care that you're struggling in school because the system is against you? Anyone. Especially after you hit 18. Buddy, you're just a fricking loser at that point.

After HS I worked in warehouses, job hopped on a dime, started and quit 50 things, and just generally never followed through on anything.

It wasn't until I started to really take stock of my life when I turned 28 and where I was at that I decided I needed to change. And honestly, I don't think I would have without the support of my wife who I love so much I don't want to subject her to my impulsive behavior. All of this without medication, I was able to get back in school, graduate with a 3.75, get a job at a reputable accounting firm, and I'm on the road to becoming a CPA at 32.

I can't go back, but knowing the road I was going to have to travel, now I would beg my mom to put me on some sort of medication. I would plead with her. I got incredibly lucky in my circumstances. Maybe if I was medicated and was less impulsive (a primary adhd trait), I would have done better in HS. Maybe I wouldn't have had to work shitty jobs and feel bad about myself for a decade, all the while having shitty people tell me I need to grow up.

Modern man is more disappointing than modern women. Soft, neurotic and materialistic.

A man needs goals, meaning, and something/someone to dote upon. We're following the women around like sick puppies today. Weve traded beautify standards in life for "hotness" and traded meaning for entertainment.

You have no power when you constantly capitulate.

na I really think most of the OT just sucks at math so bad they can not understand concepts like median, averages and percentages, the differences between each and what they represent.

no way they can be that ignorant otherwise

Anyone with kids should save and watch/listen to this

There's so many layers to this issue, but it truly comes down to men being beaten down by society and our current education system not being set up for men to truly succeed. Women are maturing faster and men are maturing later, there's very few male role models in schools for boys, which is flowing into college and then after college the mismatch between college educated women wanting a college educated man...it's not a good outlook for stable society or growing birthrates, etc.

Everyone's been so focused on raising women "up" but no one is talking about boys and young men being knocked down

Don't understand all the downvotes the OP received.
First came Man then came woman as his companion.
Men should be the leaders of their families.
Society has been pussifying men for decades.

I've found young men living traditional lives arent having the same issues modern man is.

Abandoning what got us here is the issue.

similar to me except i actually did really well in HS, went to LSU but without structure I struggled to stay on track. I wasnt on adhd medicine for same reasons. But lucky for me I had a father who was strict AF.

met my wife after dropping out of LSU, doing the army thing, working in the trades. after she figured out how smart I was she encouraged me to go back and is the reason i finished. Now pretty much everything after that is because of me but I dunno if I would have went back without her applying pressure and helping with structure and allowing me to control my impulsive behavior.

I worked in the trades for years.....the shite sucks. Its fun, but pay sucks, its hard, its hot or cold, dont get paid if you rain out, not great benefits unless in a union. lots of things just suck about it.

overall the trades are a great path for kids who have no interest in school, but for those that do....it is not a good path at all. The average person with a bachelors degree still earns over a million more in their career than those without. The average college grad is not working at starbucks like this board seems to portray.

They are only driving down the value of those degree fields. Go into any engineering major and see how many women are in the common 120 courses then look at the 200 and 300 level...they become nearly non-existent. Maybe ChemE and Biomed youll see some but MechE, Electrical, Civil, and Industrial there will be very few. Elementary Education? Flooded.

Women are currently dominating the academic realm.

You look at deans, full professors, program directors and chairs....not so much. And they are not good in those positions either, lots of in-fighting and petty arguments that do nothing for the programs they are in charge of.
