Upfront- Anyone have MagicJack? Is it any good? Can I keep my # now?

Longer version-

So, I've had it with Cox. They jacked my bill another $20 without warning. I currently have cable, phone, & data with them and the bill just jumped to $220 a month.

Today, I dropped a bunch of channels, downgraded to basic phone (since just the mother-in-law, telemarketers and the alarm use it) to get the bill to $180.

I'm considering dropping the phone thru them altogether and getting MagicJack. Anyone have experience with it and can I keep my #?

Do you just prefer having a home number? I've just used my cell for years.

I've had magic jack for about 5 years and we have maybe used it a dozen times, BUT with small kids I want to have a phone in case a babysitter forgot to charge her cell phone etc.

Simply an emergency phone

I've got kids that do not have cell phones. So they need it when they're home alone or have a babysitter.

We have had the MJ+ for over 18 months and have had no issues. We have the one that plugs into our router and is always on and does not have to rely on my computer being on. My wife wanted to have a home phone.

It has a voice mail service that sends an MP3 of the message to your email. If you have a smart phone, you are able to get the email with the MP3 file.

I cannot complain about it one bit and would certainly suggest it if you want to save money and not give the cable company $$$.

Some people prefer to keep a landline for emergency purposes.

Also...if you live in an area that has the potential for natural disasters(say a hurricane) you will appreciate having a landline when everyone else is trying to call on their cells but the signals are jammed.

For me...my cell is still my Louisiana number. I need to keep a local number so my work can contact me.

Magic jack is great for someone that is overseas a lot, or if you have close friends or family overseas, buy one and send it to them.
It will give them a U.S. area code, and as long as their computer is on and online, you can call each other just like they were in The U.S....Fairly good quality calls. That's about the only use that I really see for it.
I'm sure someone is going to mention Skype or something like that,Magic Jack is much easier.

I wish I had a landline for this reason. MagicJack wouldn't work in this case though unless you had some other equipment to power the router it would most likely be plugged into.

Didn't think about that. Mine are older and have cells. When they were younger, we just kept a $15 trac phone charged for emergencies.

I've had magic jack for a couple years. No complaints as was already stated above. I use it for conference calls when I work from home. Other than that, it receives robocalls from politicians and scam calls from Nigerians/Indians.

Also, don't forget that you can call Cox and get your bill lowered by threatening to cancel. Much cheaper to just cut the cord though. I have Internet with them. When they increased the price from $67.99 to $73.99, I called to "cancel" and got my bill lowered to $59 for the next year.

Damn. I'd try this with Xfinity, but they'd probably tell me to frick off, and bill me another $50.
