Why does it matter if it accomplishes anything? Are you really such an absurd utilitarian that you'll argue that any discussion is useless and frivolous unless it has some meaningful consequence? Because that's silly.

There's nothing wrong with talking about reality. Isn't that what anti-PC people are always saying?

Because it's a reactionary song. He's making money off the song so it's a farce that anyone will take his lyrics serious at all. The only ones that do are the ones that already believe in this crap anyway so again. Like LucasP said. What will this accomplish? Or do some people just like to "Toot their own horn"?

I'm a fan. But this song is a bit tortured. He calls out a lot of people he doesn't know for some of the same things people call him out for.

But are you ok with that?

Many times a persons ancestors worked their arse off a succeeded for the future generations to reap the benefits. Not just racially but socially and financially. There is nothing wrong with that
I'm fine with it in the sense that I don't feel any guilt for it, because the circumstances are beyond my control. It's not like I asked for this privilege at the expense of someone else. It would be absurd to feel guilty about it.

However, I think that in an ideal world, there would be no racial or sexual privilege. Everything would be based solely on merit. I think all of us can agree on that.

I haven't listened to the song so I can't comment on the sincerity of it. It could be completely insincere and politically expedient. I'll grant that.

I guess I'm talking about privilege in the broad sense, not necessarily in the context of Macklemore's song.

ok then, in the broad sense,. Say you walked up to a black person and said "I acknowledge my white privilege and wish i didn't have it"

What would happen?

So tired of this guy. Here, in the Seattle area, they even play him on the rock stations and it seems like they find a way to work him in to the evening news every fricking night. "Here's Macklemore at Pike Place", "Here's Macklemore at the Hawks game", etc... You'd think a place that produced acts like Hendrix, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam wouldn't shite their pants in excitement over this shite rapper but you'd be wrong.

Politics or no, he's a pretty damned good artist. Got me back into hip hop with The Heist a few years ago. I still listen to White Walls, Castle, and Gold a couple of times per week.

Here's the crux of the matter. Anytime someone discusses this it always turns into some broad and vague bullshite about how someone is made to feel. There's no tangible evidence of privilege so we're left to believe it exists because people tell us that they feel a certain way.

The whole idea is silly, poorly defined problem with no solution offered.

Why the hell would I ever do that?

It wouldn't be tactful or appropriate at all. But I have no idea talking about privilege with a black person if it happens to come up in conversation.

But if I did bring it up out of the blue, with a potential stranger, then I would expect it might be very awkward for both of us. Like I said, it wouldn't be appropriate in the way you framed the question.

ok then, i'm just going to stop because i'm thoroughly confused as of this point.

It's all just ridiculous man. Nothing gets accomplished at all having thought processes like this just thrown around media like that.

It's little more than a convenient excuse for failure and a means to minimize others' accomplishments.
