Reading the cat scratch thread LINK I got the impression that there are some people on the Rant with experience in Lyme / Bartonella.
My wife is about to start treatment for Lyme and Bartonella and we are both pretty concerned. I was wondering if any of you have or know someone that has been treated for this and how the treatment went.

How do you know if you have it? My son messes with the cat constantly and is always getting scratched.

I've heard Lyme is terrible. I know one of the guys from Hall & Oates has that shite and says it's a miserable existence. This was from a Howard Stern interview.

I'm only speculating, but I'm thinking a Medical Doctor made a diagnosis and is most likely setting up the treatment. I don't think Lyme is something you treat on your own with OTC meds.

It was a clinical diagnosis. At first it was "fibromyalgia" but when they put together all of her symptoms and the fact that she was hospitalized as a child for cat scratch fever, they said it was at the least Bartonella.
It's very bad.

I'd see another doctor. No way she has both.

I'm looking at the symptoms and I'm wondering if I have it.
One symptom of something called Babesia is hip pain! My hip was hurting yesterday!

I know several people who have had tick borne illness. One developed an allergy to red meat but is otherwise fine. Another is in really bad shape. She has all kinds of symptoms from no energy to failing organs. Its scary stuff for people who spend a lot of time int he outdoors.

Who diagnosed it? And where do you live? Just curious as I have family who has been diagnosed with Lyme disease.
It has been quite frustrating as. Some doctors have been quite upfront as
To the fact that they don't think she has what another doctor has said she has. Which leaves us up in the air as to what to do.

I don't know who diagnosed it, shes more of a friend to my wife so I'm not up on all the details. She lives in Tennessee. It took forever to get a diagnosis. She had to go to specialists, probably in Knoxville but I'm really not sure. It seems like the science isn't there yet for diagnosing tick borne illness. I think they finally decided that it was lyme but I could be wrong about that.
The other person who didn't have bad complications contracted it in Virginia and she said she was misdiagnosed at first too. Finally told her she had spotted fever.

Don't let the Internet wackos scare you. It is a bacteria, and if caught early, can be treated. The cases where people go 10-15 years can have long term issues. It can cause your immune system to go hyper, and if she has autoimmune issues (RA, lupus, thyroid issues, etc) it can make those worse. The main driver is getting on antibiotics long enough until the bacteria is killed.

I think some of the long-term affects are actually beginning to be attributed to such long course of antibiotics and the havoc they wreak on the gut.

I had major surgery on my face 4 years ago and they put me on 1,500 mg of antibiotics per day for about two weeks. I got so sick. To this day, my stomach has never been the same. I also have anxiety which makes it worse. It sucks. I know the antibiotics were necessary, but this shite can be so painful.

They are the same kind of bacteria (spirochete), have similar symptoms, and use the same treatment. The reason that I mentioned both is to see if anyone had experience with treatment with either one.

Duke and North Carolina State are doing some research together on tick borne diseases. I think they've got a website but I'm not sure. World's greatest expert is a veterinarian named Breitschwerdt(sp).

My uncle had Lyme disease. It almost killed him. Finally a doctor properly diagnosed it.

I can see that. Antibiotics should only be used for serious medical issues only. Your body needs bacteria, and it is a delicate balance.

My wife contracted Lyme Disease from a tick bite many years ago and it can be very debilitating. I would suggest you find a Lyme Literate Doctor and get the proper testing done. If positive, a LLD can provide the proper treatment. We had to travel to a doctor in Missouri to get the proper treatment.
