It happens all the time, but it fascinates me how quickly people buy into trends. 50 shades is just an example.. I have no idea how it became popular.. I remember reading it really isn't written well and if that is the case, was it the success of good marketing? Either way, all of a sudden everyone (mostly women) started reading it and it was as if all of a sudden.. because they read it, they had this kinky side.

Twilight wasn't well written either, and that series was very successful.
There are plenty of TV shows that are terrible that are successful (i.e. The Bachelor).
Sometimes people just enjoy simple, mindless things.

I guess its like anything else, when appealing to "the masses", it has to be dumbed down. The Hunger Games is the only book I read in recent history that became really popular and became a successful movie franchise. I don't read fiction, but for whatever reason I read the first of THG series.. It was okay, I didn't regret reading it or anything, but I am always curious as to what it is that makes a book become "mainstream".
