The uniforms were likely gray, or a dun brown. They probably simply tied the ribbon on their upper arms, if they had to go to the hardware store the day of. There would have been no time to sew stripes.

All of the old pictures I see show the colors as black and white.

The original uniforms were blue and white like the colors of the state flag. Something happened and the uniforms did not make it New Orleans for a game against Tulane. The only fabric available to make new uniforms were green, purple, and gold. Since Tulane was already wearing green, that left only purple and gold. That is how the greatest color combo in the history of sports came to be.

Our unis are easily recognizable. That’s what makes a cool uniform. Although I do sometimes mistake the packers for LSU when flipping through highlights.

Supposedly when they went to make the uniforms the green thread was all gone from a prior Mardi Gras/maybe Tulane. who knows, I have yet to see a fact check done so it would be imprudent of me to believe anything like that.

But Purple Gold and Green would be badass imo, except it would look like a battalion of helmet wearing Perli's Mardi Gras shirts coming down the field.

NOLA.COM article

They went to a store in Baton Rouge in preparation for an exhibition game in 1893 against some New Orleans guys... the green wasn't in yet, so it became purple in gold.
