JUMA was the name of the LSU band intramural teams. Those nerds were pretty fair athletes.

Does anybody remember when Expressions used to practice at Lee High?

Buddy of mine from Stanislaus was center snare there for a couple before trying out with Hurley when he got a full ride to Notre Dame. Didn’t get on with Phantom, but ended graduating as center snare at ND and performed during filming for Rudy.

Fun fact, at Stanislaus we had the same cadence (1/2 of it) as LSU since early 90’s with a revised bass score.

My advice would be to get a drum kit and start doing something you can do forever instead of something you'll be stressed about for 4 years and then never use again forever. No one is ever looking for a quad player to sit in on a wednesday night.

I mean, these are two totally different things.

That’s like telling a kid to learn golf instead of baseball because he can play it into his later years.

Being in Tiger Band is more than playing music. College marching band is a very unique experience and an opportunity to be part of the gameday atmosphere that so few get to do. Bowl trips. Road games. I could go on.

If you want to play set and make some bucks on the weekend, great. But it’s not an apples to apples comparison.

My son had a band scholarship that covered tuition. He did have to audition each year.

why wouldn't he? a scholarship athlete does, an academic scholar has to maintain a certain GPA, etc.

Don't you go thinking you got anything on Cardi B, Johnny O, Stevie B, or Chunky A for that matter.

Mr T is dissapoint he didn't make the list.

He'll be fine. He's over there hanging with Sheila E, Malcolm X, Lady A, and Jackie O.

Clarinet would be the betting favorite.

You and I both know it’s harder to make piccolo, or was when we were there. There were only 8-12 of us for a few years and 40+ that got invited to preseason (after auditions) and even seniors got cut.

Now there’s like a jillion of them.

Such an interesting story! I was very creative on that fateful day in October 2005, let me tell ya.

I was an all state flute player and principal in orchestra my junior year and second chair symphonic my senior year. First chair All south, ark La Tex, had full music rides to many good music schools and chose lsu to be in tigerband…. Not knowing if I’d actually even make the tigerband. I remember being so nervous the day they posted the list. I actually brought my uniform back to the band hall (kinda cruel they issued uniforms before you made it) just incase I didn’t make the cut.

I did. It was really fun but certain sections are much harder to make. Drum line is very competitive. If you have a pulse you can make it on trumpet, trombone. Harder for woodwinds with piccolo being the hardest bc we were literally only there for the obligato in Hey Fightin Tigers. If a trumpet player could have learned it we’d have been cut. Now I see they have a lot more piccs but I think it’s because tigerband isn’t getting the level of interest it did when I was there under Frank, Linda and Roy.

it's a real shame to see it fall back a little, when I was there everyone had so much pride in TGBFTL, because you guys were kickass

You’re right. It makes me sad—I’m still a big fan of the organization but it changed when Linda left. She should have gotten the job.

I have seen this stated again and again in band threads on the Rant, as well. Damn shame that politics, as usual, screwed something up.
