NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has filed a federal lawsuit against Orleans Parish, seeking to overturn long-standing “sanctuary” policies.
Murrill’s lawsuit challenges a 2013 consent judgment that prohibits the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office from honoring most ICE detainer requests and prevents it from sharing detainees' immigration status with federal authorities.
The consent decree restricts OPSO’s ability to comply with ICE warrants, except in cases involving murder, rape, kidnapping, treason, or armed robbery. It also mandates that ICE agents must obtain a court order and ensure legal representation is provided before interviewing detainees in OPSO custody.
Murrill’s suit argues that Louisiana law now mandates cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. She contends that the new law should have led to the termination of the 2013 consent judgment, but that no action has been taken.
