I mean can you deny that the best comedians these days are a bit hushed because of the environment? I’m not crying about it

Hogg is not a victim, he’s a shill. The best thing that ever happened to him was someone he bullied snapping and others paying the price.
And if he didn’t act like such a smug, sanctimonious shite, no one would have bothered with him.
That’s the joke...you don’t get to dictate how others live just because bad things happen to other people.

If you watched chapelle's sets on netflix you wouldn't say that. He still doesnt give a frick but he does it the right way. Just like he always has.

A lot of folks want to like it because it pushes buttons, but the parkland bit is hack comedy; you can't lack total empathy for the victim if you're going to insult the victim. He could have dressed it up much better.
I don't doubt he'll dress it up a bit better...these small shows are usually warm ups and fine tuning for a tour (if he ends up touring again).
That said, I didn't think anything he said about it was out-of-bounds. I don't think he had any political motivation behind the joke, either. You've got to remember these are jokes and often contain satire...to insinuate he doesn't feel empathy for dead kids because of a joke is quite a stretch.

Right? He also joked about shooting his dad In the head after forcing him to sodomize him...
Which honestly was a lot less funny.

I'm sure you're right about this, but him being a seasoned comedian he should have done this before stepping on stage.

I'm not saying he doesnt. If you're going to write a joke about a school shooting you have to dress it up better by empathizing with the victim before the punchline.
This is the chapelle joke, and it is a masterclass example of how you defend an opinion.
quote:
He talks about seeing Pacquaio fight Mayweather, and addresses the controversial anti-gay comments the boxer made in 2016 (which Pacquiao made a month before the special was recorded): “…Manny Pacquaio said some outlandish shite about gay people. Very, very not nice things I won’t repeat, but it was biblical verses and some analogies to animals. It wasn’t a good look. Nike took his shoes immediately, which I thought was a little harsh, a little harsh, you know what I mean, because, just because he’s Asian...”
Chappelle goes on to explain to the audience, “I say this with no disrespect. We’re all Americans, and we can all agree that America has a huge body count all over the world, but nowhere more than Asia. Literally, if you look at history recently, we have bombed the masculinity out of an entire continent. We have dropped two atomic bombs on frickin’ Japan and they’ve been drawing Hello Kitty and shite ever since.”
quote:
The comedian’s obviously familiar with the Filipino OFW experience as well: “…if you know what’s poppin’ in the Philippines, you know they have a whole generation of kids growing up without their mothers. Yes, a lot of women in the Philippines go to the Arabian Peninsula, they come to the United States. They make all their money here, they send all that money back home, which is still one of the number one staples of the Philippine economy. Money that their expats send back to the Philippines.”
And he has a theory on how it affects Filipino husbands: “The men on the other hand are left rearing children, twiddling their thumbs, waiting on their wives’ checks. These men have been frickin’ emasculated. And then suddenly a boxer rises from amongst them and reinstates their manhood with his motherfrickin’ fists. This is not the guy who you’re supposed to ask what he thinks about homosexuals. He’s not your champ.”

That's like telling drew brees to call tom Brady and arrange and full pad scrimmage in their yards instead of having the preseason games

I have, my point still stands

That's not a joke, that's social commentary. Is that from the last Netflix special when he's sitting down real close to the audience? If so, that whole set seemed much less like a a comedy set than a conversation. Not sure it's fair to compare CK's stand-up with that.
Also, the way he frames that Pacquaio deal reminds me of the people who got upset about Phil Robertson's anti-gay comments. You asked an old, bearded redneck from BFE Louisiana what he thinks about gays. WTF did you think he was going to say?

Wanna know how I know you’ve never done stand-up?

It’s like they’ve lost all self awareness.
I’d say “orange man bad, southern man racist” is just about the laziest comedy out there. Yet that’s...pretty much their entire show

quote:I agree. I like Louise CK and he can do better. Good jokes about sensetive topics offend a little while causing one to laugh but also rethink something. I think he might have a decent parkland shooting joke there, but it's sloppy and missed the mark as done in the leaked recording. It needs to be reworked.
My complaint with that bit is how aggressively hackey it is.

I mean...that’s the point of doing sets and trying out new material, to find what works and how it works and playing with the wording and delivery.
This wasn’t some big stand up special, and I think he even says the people there didn’t even know he’d be performing a day before. So i’d expect it not to be as polished.
I don’t agree with everything he says or like everything he does, but most of that set was pretty funny

quote:I get that. I just think parkland bit was a lack of effort all together. He's way smarter than that joke as comprised. It felt gratuitous and lazy. I can see an angle where there might be a good social commentary bit there. I hope he gets it right, but it's probably scrapped now.

ETA: to be clear I was commenting on the parkland bit, not his whole set.
