The state has offered to assist the city-parish in securing a local match to help fund five badly needed drainage projects in East Baton Rouge Parish, according to the governor’s office.

Specifically, the state is considering tapping into monies from capital outlay and the ending year fund balance, the governor’s office says, expecting to secure the necessary dollars next legislative session. It’s going to serve as a major point of discussion next week, during a planned meeting between Gov. John Bel Edwards, Mayor Sharon Weston Broome and U.S. Rep. Garret Graves. Ultimately, the city-parish needs a $65 million local match to improve five key drainage canals, including Bayou Fountain, Jones Creek, Beaver Bayou, Blackwater Bayou and Ward’s Creek. Local officials previously told Daily Report the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers made $25 million available, which Baton Rouge would have to repay over a 30-year period—and even if that shakes out, some $40 million is still needed upfront

Gonna hit up St. George for one last donation.

I still can't believe they did absolutely nothing after the 2016 flood. There wasn't even much of a public outcry for it.

They should let that place flood and then start all over.

Translation:
JBE is sending some skimmable cash to ensure they get the black vote out for his re-election.

Amazing. They didn't even change free things like Planning & Zoning / Development requirements.

It is bad for him in the Baton Rouge area. Place is as negative as ever. Broome, Flooding, Murphy Paul, Shootings, St. George, Attacking Exxon and business.

Honor Code swooping in to bail out BR just a couple months before the election. That will make a nice campaign ad while Eddie Rispone is still talking about the stickers on his truck.

The entire town of Denham Springs was under water. Lots of flooding along Millerville too. Plenty of actual homeowners were affected.

Doesn't all this mean nothing if the diversion project is still on hold?

I attended a couple of public meetings on one of the new subdivisions on Jones Creek. a large portion of this area flooded. We were continually told by the commission and their engineers, that the subdivisions proposed retention ponds would handle any potential flood water....ok, thanks.
My home in a small subdivision off of Jones Creek between Coursey and South Harrell's Ferry received about 14" of water. I don't think the new retention ponds will make up for the hundreds of new homes being built.

Central, Zachary, and the proposed St. George area were all affected in 2016, and are all within East Baton Rouge.

the thread title says BR drainage projects not East Baton Rouge.

The City of Baton Rouge and the Parish of East Baton Rouge are a consolidated government.

Retention ponds are a joke. They end up filled in with silt and erosion and never work as planned. Many hold water to the top or they hold more water than designed so explain that one. Far too often the new concrete and rooftops shed more water than anticipated and the retention ponds just cannot do their job.
When you call out the city for it they will make every excuse in the book and say it is the homeowners problem not theirs.

100% agree with this!! There are already two retention ponds in the area and they both hold water continuously!
