Way back when, I used to hit Tropical Isle (Toulouse) Ryan's Irish Pub, The Abbey and Buffa's on Esplanade.
All of this goes back 25 years, easy.
ETA: Checkpoint Charlie's was an interesting detour once in a while. Port O Call was good for the monsoons but the food was meh and overpriced.

There are a lot of bars that aren't horrible. Start with the French 75 and go from there.
