Looking for a set to provide as a gift for Christmas. There was a long thread posted some time back with lots of good options but I have not been able to find it. Not looking to spend over 500.00. Any suggestions or a possible link to the previous thread would be much appreciated.

Mercer Culinary

I’ve bought mine individually. Never had better for such a low price.

This is a place where a gift certificate is better IMO.
That way the cook can go to the store and pick out the knives that feel the best for his/her hands and what he/she does as a cook.

Some people may wish they had a heavy duty cleaver, other may never do their own butchering.
Others may have lusted after a certain knife but not bought it as "too expensive".

The seven knives I use have come together as my cooking has evolved. Every one has a different handle, they live in a drawer and I can immediately grab the one I want. (And I was given a knife set as a wedding present; we returned it and got the knife I wanted and several other things for the kitchen.)

A kitchen is a really personal place for some cooks.

I like Henckels Pro and own them. You should be able to find a few options with a variety of knives from that line in your budget (7-piece set with shears is around $370 on Amazon). And then there are an additional 15-20 knives that would fit in the set for an aspiring chef that needed something different. The wife and I love the bread knife that matches. It was a thing I didn’t think I needed.

If you want something of excellent quality and a bit different then I'd look hard at Warther:

Warther Cutlery block sets

My fiancee gifted me a monogrammed carving set in a presentation box and it's wonderful to use, strictly my holidays/special occasion set. S35VN steel, American-made, awesome fit and finish if the woodwork, and a joy to use. I've been adding individual pieces every year building up the Executive Chef block set.

I agree with the gift cert route. But you asked for suggestions so:
Zwelling Pro Ice Forged blah blah blah SET
I have been thoroughly impressed by this Zwelling Pro set. Plus, 20% coupon at BB&B.
