He's referring to the metro, not the city proper...I suspect. Still think NO is slightly bigger or they are about the same.

Montgomery is Jackson without the OT common exposure.

Yeah. No doubt you can live a comfortable life in a safe bham suburban area on 150k, but you aren't living the high life.

Yea you aren’t “live like a king” in Birmingham with a combined income of $150k. That will probably get you to the top of the middle class though.

Try to find a "fixer upper" in the old Hollywood section of Homewood. Add a master suite and flip it for 150k profit when you leave.

I lived in Birmingham from 13-16. First year was off of highland in downtown, last two were in vestavia. The city and its suburbs are not without flaws but both my wife and I loved it. Hope to move back one day.

Pretty sure there are actually A LOT of Jews in mountain brook. Maybe not families though.

...but according to statistics it’s like 98% white. Don’t think there is another public school in Alabama like it

There are. Most of them live in a sub-neighborhood compound right next to their temple. You can see them walking on Saturdays.

B Ham suburbs are far superior to anything we have in LA in including north shore.

Hoover, Mountain Brook, homewood are all highly regarded suburbs. The city itself is supposed to be getting better year by year.

Overlooked food scene. Better outdoor activities.

If I were you I’d take the job.

Everyone here who doesn't live in Birmingham or has exposure to it more than 10 years ago will tell you it's shitty. Everyone here who lives there now or visits with frequency will tell you that it's a pretty cool place to live

Eh. Birmingham (or parts of it) are certainly nice. But it’s not a cool place to live.

There is enough to do. The scenery is pleasant. Good amenities for a city it’s size. But there is nothing exciting about it.

Coming from the Northshore, it wouldn’t be too bad.

But I find people that live there really trying to hype it up because they are comparing it to old Birmingham, not other cities like Nashville, Atlanta, New Orleans, Houston etc.

I could have lived there. My wife was the one that had opportunity there because that’s where she went to school and said no thanks.

My wife is from Birmingham and she'd live almost anywhere else first. Some people just have an innate hatred for their hometown.

I wouldn't live in Birmingham proper with a family though. Almost every suggestion is to live in the suburbs which tells you everything you need to know.

I think you should look at oak mountain schools (soccer) as well as vestavia/Hoover and try to get close to the river and state park. Sure, the Cahaba is a glorified creek but you can still float down it.

I see what you’re saying about hometowns. There’s very few places in La you’d want to live in instead of their suburb.

Seems like everything is located in the suburbs anyways. You’d only go to BHam for work.

My in laws white flighted to Vestavia about 6 years ago. Birmingham is gentrifying downtown but the city itself wouldn't be a place I'd want to raise a family on a middle/upper middle class income.

It's like saying Houston is a great place to raise a family, but live in Katy or The Woodlands

For the record, I'm not interested in Birmingham proper. I mean, I live in Mandeville for a reason.
